Question 87 Chevy/GMC dizzy upgrade or not

Hello all,

I got a question about the 87 dizzy in a Chevy/GMC model 305. It’s the factory model with the massive electronic connection on it that has variable timing control. It’s jacked into another electronic module setting on the engine. I don’t have the shop manual, so I can’t give you the exact terms. I don’t hear much about this type dizzy, so my question is:

With the factory electronic setup, can this dizzy be replaced with something more up to date? Or I’m I stuck with it unless everything goes. I get the feeling this will not be a cheap trick!

Also, has anyone used this type dizzy on a 327 or 427 block? The shaft & gear should work just the same, right?
