Ok, I have decided to convert off the R12 system. My local wrench says he will conver to 134 for $145.00. Other option is find a kit and a vaccume pump (which I would probably never use again) and do it myself... I am thinking 145 aint bad in NC. Any opinions about this?

I have done several of my own and I would pay 145 to have it done.

I just had mine done for $189.00

I also had bought the R134 kit on ebay(Oil and fittings) and took it to the A/C shop and they did the rest, works GREAT.

mine did not have A/C. I bought all the stuff off Ebay for $350 + shipping, and took out old heater stuff and installed the take off assy from a 72 and had to get a new hose assy, compressor and dryer.(I didnot trust the old take comp, dryer and hoses). I paid to much in the long run but it has A/C now. I just need to install the 3 vents and run the ducts to them. I learned alot also.......

If you don't plan on building anymore a/c cars and trucks go for it. I myself just seem to have a tool fetish...

I have a 93 honda to deal with as well, but am still not sure if I am going to do it or not.

Found a place in town (recomended by the guy at CarQuest) that will do the conversion for 80-100 depending on the amount of 134 used. THat makes it a done deal, I am taking it tomorrow so it will be ready to take the wife to the submarine races on friday night. We have a babysitter! wew hoo.

Ok so he went to 114.00 on me but still not bad. I have cool air, but it sounds like my compressor is struggling (makes a rythmic ticking noise when the AC is on). I guess I will have to replace that next summer, but until it goes I have much cooler air. He is getting 50-51 deg on the hwy. I read in FAQ that they added more coolant when it is cooler outside and were able to get temp down to 46 but with the compressor clacking I will wait to tweak until after it blows.

Input always welcome, but I think I got a pretty good deal.

The noise may not be the compressor. Could just be the clutch either possibly going out or just from sitting. It may very well go away.

I thought it was due to the new resistance with being full of coolant. I have not heard it before when the AC was working, all be it not very cool. If the clutch does go can I get that replaced, or best just to replace the entire unit (again they may be seprate, I am not that advanced).

I went through a bad a/c clutch on my last truck. It was cheaper or the same price to buy the whole compressor (clutch and all) that it was to buy just the clutch. So I bought the whole thing and not wanting to open up the system I used just the clutch. Ended up being good trading material later.

Hope it last a long time for ya before it goes bad. To be on the safe side keep a big pair of dykes with ya in case the compressor seizes up and you need to cut off the belt.
