230 & 250 L6 Differences?

I have a 250 L6 from a '71 Chevy truck that I would like to put in one of my '66 Chevy IIs. Can I swap the Nova oil pan & pump to the 250? Are there any other items I will have to change to make it work? Any info will be appreciated. Thanks, Mike

I don't know if the oil pans are different between cars and trucks, but I just went through this and the only difference between the two is the crank and the pistons. I found this out the hard way. I bought a new piston for my 250 only to later find out that someone put in a 230 crank and pistons. My 250 is really a 230. The 230 pistons are the same as a 283 v8, and 250 pistons are the same as a 307 v8. Anybody need a brand new 307 piston?

Take a close look at where the alternator, power steering and such bolt on. That is about the only difference in the block and head. Also check the height of the intake and carb. If you have to you can swap the manifolds. All in all, it should be a simple swap.

250 pistons are not the same as 307 pistons, although the dimensions are very close. The 250 piston is dished, while the 307 piston is a flat-top. There is also a slight compression height difference.

Sounds Promising

The Chevy II has a VERY unusual oil pan for those who have never seen one. The oil reservoir is in the center because of the suspension, instead of the back like other cars and trucks. As long as 230 and 250 have the same bolt pattern for the pan, I should be alright. I will keep everyones advice in mind. Thank you, Mike

I wish it was mine. It's in a 37 Chevy owned by streetroddertim at www.myoldtruck.com . He doesn't get on the net much. Most of the parts are Clifford, but I don't know where he bought them. One place is www.stoveboltengineco.com one of the sponsors at www.inliners.org . That 250 puts out about 300 hp.
