Power steering pump
Aloha y'all!
Haven't been to this new board- looks good! I'm trying to swap my '69 GMC over to power steering. It was going okay until last night- my pulleys don't line up! I've got another one that I think will work, but I've never pulled a pulley off a pump. Is there a trick to it? I don't want to chuck the pulley in a bench vise to get the allen head plug out - I have to believe there's a better way to do this. Any of you done this before? Thanks! |

I was in the same boat as you when I did power steering on my 69. Luckily I got the crank pulley from a friend when I was getting some other parts and his crank pulley was the right spacing. No idea on the correct way to pull the pulley of the pump.

You realy need a power steering pump pully puller..... LOL Toungue twister!! In fact though they do exsist. I have seen them sell on ebay.. Anyway I have tried to remove many power steering pullys without one and have destroyed all but one. The power steering pully puller has a special end that fits the front center of the pully in the slots and uses that to break it free from the shaft. You cant pull on the outside of the pully with a standard gear puller, because it will just bend the pully!! WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Parts stores like Autozone and O'Reilly's loan them. Don't attempt to pull the pulley on the pump without the pump pulley puller. (Just had to do that.)

Your PS pump pulley part number should have the last 3 digits of 537 its on front of pulley,I have never used a pulley remover,i have about a dozen of those 537 pulleys.i put pressure on pulley,use a large brass punch(dont use metal or just a hammer)and i untighten nut,and one good whack with hammer and brass punch the pulleys come off,ive yet to ruin a pump.also remember there was like 2-3 different ps crank pulleys,the early Impala ones were different along with their pump pulley they have a offset,your pulley on pump should be almost flat.I have a pulley remover but ive only used it once when i first got it.but if you need one Checkers/Kragen/Shucks have them,Autozone also rent them if you dont want to buy.

The pump puller problem probably presents prognostication. I've always had the auto parts store change them out for me cause the re-built pumps always came w/o one. I never got to see them do it though.
