What is the main purpose of header wrap.. Does it help keep the heat in?

Today one of my plug wires melted on my headers and my truck was running like crap.. i replaced the wire and ran it a little differently.. hopefully it doesnt happen again.. would header wrap prevent this?

it helps with the heat. to help pervent what happened to you. also theres a coating *jet hot I think* that kinda does the same thing. but wraping your headers would really help. I think its kinda like a tape that you just wrap around the pipes.

Ive heard that the header wrap will shorten the life of the headers, and that the jet hot is the best way to solve the heat. Idont have any experience with either choice but that is what Ive heard numerous times.

My opinion is the purpose is to rust your headers out.

coat your existing headers or get coated headers, the only way to go IMO.

Use a quality set of sparky wires (MSD has a hhigher heat resistance than other brands) Moroso also...

Be sure to coat the inside of the tubes also or you will really shorten the life of the tubes. Tough to do on used parts as they have to be clean inside for the coating to adhere.

When you put that header wrap on headers it looks like a "mummy header".

the actual purpose of the header wrap is specifically to hold heat inside the header tubes, and direct it out the collector or tailpipe. as we all know a cooler engine makes more power. this works great on race cars that done see regular extended periods of operation. as Chris said, when in a daily driver situation it fatigues the tubes, and the welds, and you end up with cracked headers. Jet-Hot or a similar treatment is the only way to go.

My first set of headers which I wrapped lasted for nearly 11 years, so I doubt wrapping them shortened the life. As far as plug wires melting, even when wrapped or coated, direct contact will usually still destroy the wire in question. Proper routing and quality wires is the best solution.
