Just got the sound deadoning pads that have a black tar like substance on one side and white foam padding on the other. My old ones were so mangled when I took them out that I didnt notice which side went against the cab floor. Anybody know the deal with these things?

The foam side was up on mine, that way from factory.

The foam was down on mine. I just ripped it out today. I found lots of new rust i didn't know about and 63 cents

I'm almost 100% sure that it's black side down! althought I don't really think it would make much of a difference.

just took them out yesterday the white foamy piece goes against the paint and the black will be on the top .the black should have a water proof paper and the paper side goes down.

I took mine out Saturday. I didn't see any white

. But the orginal cardboard backing was out. The padding was against the metal. Hope this helps.

Most I have seen a have the tar side down and the foam up.

But as many I have seen the otherway as well.

The tar side was supposed to stick to the floor boards to stop the sonic resonance that the truck has from the engine running.

There are a ton of newer cars/truck that have just got the tar on the boards and then have jude padding under the carpet.

The jude acts to insulate and keep heat/cold out as well as give the carpet a softer feel .
The foam side was supposed to hold the jude material that goes just under the carpet from shifting.

They use a spray adheasive to take the place of the foam holding the jude in most newer cars
Also the tar acts kinda like a under coating to help stop rust from forming.
The foam would hold mosture if it were facing the floor and it couldent evaporate if the tar were on top ....Kinda like if you put a plastic cover over a bucket of water (if mosture ever got in there).

the tar is for sound deadening and vibration deadening...it goes against the floor pans

the closed cell white foam is for temperature insulation...it goes directly on top of the tar paper stuff.

carpet or rubber floor mat goes on top of this.

Ok, i will say it again i bought my truck new the black tar side is down the foam side is up. one reason is so the carpet or rubber mat does not stick to the tar. As sooner or later u will have to replace the carpet or pad. u do not have to try to pry them apart after ten years or so. Also the foam helps stop the dirt from building up in the tar, if u lift up your carpet every so often u can vacuum the dirt from the top of the pad. If u have the tar side up the dirt will be stuck to it.

maybe it depends ,all my trucks have rubber mats but all of mine have the white foam down first,and i also notice that the black tar piece has a water proof coating to keep it from sticking to the mat.

snow man - bpogs@alaska.net is my home email.. Any pics would be great. Sounds like everybody has it different with the tar and foam deal. Maybe they put the foam down with the rubber mats and the foam up with the carpet. Who knows. I'm gonna find the right answer on this even if I have to find somebody at GM Corp to answer it.

Mine was tar down, but i took it out when i removed my floor mat
to see how much rust i had to deal with. The tar was pretty moist,
i kinda think it held in moisture and made my floor rust out

. When
i put new carpet in it, i will either coat the floor with POR 15, or
undercoating to protect the new sheetmetal.

In all the trucks I had the foam has been up tar down...... the only wone that wasnt that way had a rubber mat......
