Well, I got her out of the garage today - took a spin around the block. What a ride - first trip in > a year! And quite a noise with open headers :-) probably made some enemies out of my neighbors.

Now I have to figure out how to get 'er out of first gear. Any 700r4 experts around? I'm pretty sure my tv cable is set correctly (using TV Made EZ kit from bowtieoverdrives). Pressure looks good and rises immediately when I hit the gas. But no matter how high the engine rpms go she won't shift from first. I pulled the govenor and it looks fine - the valve seems to be moving freely.

Any ideas?!? I gotta go faster than 20 mph!

I have read from several magazines that improper setup of the TV cable can cause the trans to destroy itself in as little as a few miles-----I dont know how to set it up myself-----just saying I would be asking a lot of questions to some mechanics.

Don't laugh, this is possible... if it's not slipping after fist gear, and just not "shifting" into second... have you, um, maybe, checked your shifter linkage??? Chances are you don't have the neutral safety switch hooked up, so it will start in gear. Try to put it in reverse yet? Make sure your fluid level is good and if its not one of these two I have NFI and would give BTO a holler

Does it shift after you let up on the gas? I am having a similar problem with my 87 but it shifts wheni let up on the gas. Keep me posted on what you find and I will do the same. Kurt

No shifting no matter how much gas I give it. Bowtieoverdrives says it could be the valve body !?!

I hate those damn 700r4s my advice go to a turbo 350 or 400 and if u want overdrive by the gear vendors if ur making any realy horespower/torque say 400+ the 400 will help u get it to the ground better anyway pluss the things almost never break otherwise u'll just become a 700r4 trans expert could be big bucks for u in that though if u like trans work

Year and source are not certain, but tranny builder thinks they came from a 86 chevy truck.

That might be part of your problem there. I have been told if I decided to put one of these in a truck to make sure it is an '87 or later because they have had trouble with some of these transmissions before '87. I am not sure if this is really part of your problem or not but just what I have been told.

Well, I have worked with 6-7 or these beast and if the tranny guy doesn't know what year it is I think it is time to get a new tranny guy. The 700R4 has a host of problems that when built have to be fixed or you are in for a rash of problems. The sprag is week(unless it is a vette trans) the sun gear is week(unless it is a vette). There are a few other problems with the early one also. There should be some numbers/letters on the right side when looking from the top, I might be able to shed some light on it.

Ok, so given the fact that I'm stuck with the transmission that I have, are there any suggestions for what to check, hopefully with tranny still in the vehicle? It's an extra pain to drop the pan because the tranny has to be lifted to gain access to the pan bolts that are over the xmember, so that means the drive shaft has to come out... so I don't want to be in and out of there too many times if I can help it.

I have had the pan off mine twice trying to find something that I was not afraid to mess with. I have it working better than before but still have a slight problem. It works ok if i downshift it while sitting still but it will not downshift on its own when I come to a stop. It feels like it is taking off in 3rd gear. I have been told that a TH350 with a long tail shaft is a direct swap without changing drive shaft, etc. That is what I want to do. Anybody want to trade a good th350 for an almost good 700r4? LOL
