I just rebuilt the a/c in my 71 suburban.I replaced all the hose,which is about 25' long.I replaced the compresser,and drier.Pulled the condensor off,and the evaperater off the roof and flushed them real good.Put it all back together with new orings,put in 12oz off ester oil,pulled a 4 hour vacuume.When i saw the vac held without dropping,I filled it with 80oz of r134a.I was getting vent temps of 46 and pressures of 325 high and 35 low.Put on a new fan clutch,dropped the vent temp to 40 and pressure to 295 and 28.That was with the ambient temp of 94 degrees.

Pretty close to $400.00.Plus I bought an a/c vacuume pump for $138.00.I had gauges.I got the pump,and drier at napa.The compressor,hoses,oil and orings from ackits.com,and the hose clamps from McMaster-Carr.It is recomended to not use worm drive clamps.I sanded the ridges off the stock hose barbs so they don't cut the barrier hose.Look at www.mcmaster.com part # 5443k16

I was wondering how you made out with it! Did you get it ready for Carlilse? Is that 40 degree's at the front, middle or rear vents? I'm gettin' a chill just thinking about 40 deg a/c in a burb.

Yes,I had it ready for Carlisle.It didn't make it the whole way though!

Fuel pump took a crap.Luckly I was right near the Reading exit,and a guy I went to school with has a towing business a couple miles from there.He towed me home,and we jumped in the van and still made it up to Carlisle.
The truck is back running,and the a/c is working even better now that the temps dropped a little.The 40 was at the rear.But it gets cold enough that I can turn the blower down after it cools off.

Sorry to hear the "trouble" on the way there. I didn't get out of my driveway, had some unexpected stuff come up which cancelled my plans.

I will hopefully be getting into my underdash A/C soon.

That is great news on the AC!

We are going to be putting my son's 72 Burb system back in over the winter and your success with R-134 is encouraging. It is the two section system.

I have a couple of questions on your system: 1) Does it have the POA setup,
and 2) Is the compressor the original style?

No,it is the tunnel style with a unit in the rear only.It has 2 tvx valves.Yes it has the original style compressor.They work well with r134's high head pressures.I also have a 72 that I am going to rebuild the a/c system on.It has a poa set-up.The poa can be adjusted for r134.Check out www.autoacforum.com Do a search under poa valves.Lots of good info.The forum is connected to a/ckits.com.That is were I got my hoses.They were cheaper than anyone local,even with shipping.

I have the link to the site and have tried out the test/adjustment of the POA valve. Very good information!

Do you see any problems using the POA valve with the R-134?

We have all of the hoses made up already and have eliminated all barb connections.

No,I don't.The Guy that came up with the adjustments said he was getting lower temps with the adjusted poa than he was with a poa eliminater.Others did the same thing with the same results.
