Speaking of gas mileage!
How many more miles per gallon would I get if I swapped out my 3.73 gears for say 2.73's, or 292's(forgive me if I got those numbers wrong.
My truck is 1971 Cheyenne 3/4 Ton 2wd 400 SBC/4 bbl Quadrajet/400 Turbo 3spd w/3.73 Open rear Eaton 10 bolt(HO52). I think I get around 8 to 10 mpg now. Thanks, 71400LB |

If you run your foot correctly, my guess would be you should see 16ish or more on the highway.

Highway numbers will go up, but be careful. I had a 82 K-10 with 305 v8 and 3.08 gears with 4 speed manual. Got wonderful MPG highway, but city suffered because engine was always lugging and low in RPM range. And not to mention a dog down low until you got the revs up. Was pretty much a dog until you got to 65 MPH...then she roared! You need to find the sweet spot in RPM range. Not too high or too low.
Best way I've found to increase MPG is to do good tune up (plugs, wires, fuel & air filter, pcv, check timing, etc.), keep tires inflated to proper psi, and most importantly, drive with a light foot. Ramming around really kills the MPG.

Be careful not to get too high of a gear. Your best bet would be 3.42 gears. You'll have good bottom end pull and still have good hiway manners too. I just swapped my 3.07 for a 3.73 and I get metter mileage because all my runnin around is in town. I still got good mileage when i went to KY last month.
It all depends where you drive the most, in town or on the highway. I could probably get 17 or 18 if I could keep my foot out of it. I'm doin good to get 14 cause I like rammin around in it all the time. I even run a Holley carb!

Gas mileage
You guys are overlooking the most important part of his post. He says he's got a small block 400. That'll have the power for the higher gears, but having had one of those in a 1/2 ton with TH350 and 3.08 rear, I doubt it'll get better than 12-14 mpg. JMO, but based on experience. Frank
