Loose Steering Problem
Hey guys. I know basically nothing when it comes to the steering system components and what makes a tight steering setup. The problem is I have a 68 chevy c-10 lwb that is lowered. It has a mid 70's 350 and has power steering. I have play in my steering wheel all the way from 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock. I am not sure where to start in tracking down the problem. Any help would be greating apprieciated. Thanks alot.

Several things could be wrong. First thing to do is get a helper. Start by turning the steering wheel and watching what moves and what doesn't. Then jack up the front end, put the stands under the A-arms. Grab the tire and turning the wheels, just like the steering wheel would. Again, look for what moves and doesn't Then hold the tire at the top and bottom, rocking in and out. Another test is with a prybar, try to separate the ball joints and tie rod ends.
Worn parts can include: steering gear (can be adjusted), tie rod ends, ball joints, pitman arm, idler arm, upper and lower control shafts, and wheel bearings. If you're no comfortable with your abilities, go to a front end shop and have them check for you. If they don't charge you, go back for the alignment after you have done the work.

agree with Fred T but don't forget the rag joint. Make sure that 37 year old piece is not bad.
