700R4 in a '69 LWB Questions...
I posted in the engine and drivetrain section, but am having no luck, hoping my fellow 67-72'ers can help out. Having issues with the 700R4 lockup wiring:

lockup wiring
Most of the guys here read the engine and drivetrain section too and a lot of them have seen dozens of posts about the 700 r4.
You need to educate yourself on the ins and outs of installing the 700 r4 in your truck before you worry about the lockup wiring. For instance if you don't set up the throttle valve cable correctly then the trans won't last long. Any year prior to 87 is generally considered to be weak and will not hold up to much more than a mild 350 and normal driving without some extensive mods. I would suggest you read the FAQS on swapping a 700 into your truck. There are several websites to get info on the torque converter clutch lockup wiring. Bowtie overdrives is one and TCI has a good one also. As you know already the driveshaft has to be shortened 3 inches and unless you swap in the steering column from the van the shifter will not show overdrive. This is not a big deal as long as you can get low gear. Here is a great site about the tv cable and below that is an article on the lockup wiring. My advice is to run a th350 or a 400 . http://www.tvmadeez.com/article/index.html http://www.montecarloss.com/SSThunder/drivetrain.html scroll down to the 700 r4 section Have fun

I've read the FAQ's and read over the sites posted as well. I know there are lots of questions about the install, and no one ever reads the FAQ's and never searches it, but I did. The tranny is in, used an auto column and don't care about "seeing" 1st, with the TV cable adjusted enough to get it to my tranny shop, shifts great, but I do not want to take any chances. The truck drives, shifts, etc, but does not lock up, that is why I am now worried about the lockup. I know that my 83 700R4 is weak, but that is what I have. I paid $200 for the truck, and got a free, running 305 and 700R4 out of a van. That is why I am going with the 700, and it is only a stock 305, so I am not too concerned with breakage. I have looked at tons of sites about the lockup, but none show me the internals like mine. Most show the one that I posted, and mine is much different. I just thought someone on the board might have a little insight, since mine looks different than the others posted.
I hope I didn't come off like some moron that is "considering" putting a 700R4 in my truck and is going to tie up bandwidth asking a bunch of question. The tranny is in, everything is ready except the lockup wiring. My tranny pan is off, waiting to get wired correctly. I will scrounge the sites again tonight seeing if anything is different, or I missed something, but if anyone else has any suggestions, they'd be greatly appreciated. Squid

I don't think you come off that way at all. The google search is a p.i.t.a.! We see the same questions all the time and someone that is not bored with it yet will point ya in the right direction. I think the 700r4 is a good choice cause it gives you the best of both worlds od and towing capability (within reason) in 3rd, wich is 1:1 just like the 400's and 350's. To try for any mileage at all ya would have to go with TALL tires or taller gears in the diff..
Here are some sites I used for wiring mine. This guy has some good diagrams posted, indicator lights and what-not: http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sum...o/700R4p1.html Here is TCI's full instructions: http://www.tciauto.com/instructions/376600_inst.htm Here is a page with good pics: http://www.highperformancecars.com/crosley/lockup1.htm Between these 3 sites you should be able to figure it out. B.T.W., This was pretty late in my project and I had had enough of trying to cheap out on everything and just wanted it DONE. So, I said screw it and bought the TCI kit. Went in SO easy. You can scrounge all the stuff for literally a few bucks from a junk-yard though. |

I also installed a 700R4 in my truck. Although it is from an '88 van, the internal wiring looks a lot like yours. I traced out exactly where all of the wires connected on all of those extra switches, and determined that I could just connect power to the one pin and loop the other two pins together as you mentioned. Works fine. If you want to know for certain, take a close look at where all the wires go, draw up a schematic, and post it here.

Actually the switches in my transmission are quite a bit different than yours now that I'm looking at the picures. My 4th gear switch only has one connection point, but yours has two. I have a temperature switch. The best thing would be to trace out your wiring.
