steering is really bad!!!!
my steering sucks on my 1972 gmc 1/2 ton 4x4.any ideas?if i point it straight it will go right and left. i think the box is bad. is the box the same as the 73-87 box?

I was having a bit of this problem as well. My truck dives to the left (yes oncoming traffic) a little bit. I was hoping it was something like tie rods and didn't really want to hear that my power steering box was going bad.
Sorry no real fixes, only sharing in the pain.

I believe to use the 73-up ps boxes, you have to notch the bumper brace slightly. They are also variable power assist. Much better from what I understand.

This needs to be over here. These guys know their stuff. Just have a little patience. I would start by checking the frame for cracks and loose joints while someone steers it from side to side. Sounds like you have some worn out stuff or something is loose. Oh and if you are laying under it make sure you trust the one behind the wheel....

You might check your inner axle u-joints, they can freeze up solid from rust and make the steering awful squirely.
Raise the front of the truck up off the ground and with the wheels straight you should be able to spin both tires freely, now turn the wheels to the right and spin them again, then to the left, if there is any binding replace them.

i think i read here somewhere that the 4x4 box is different than the 2x4 so if you get a newer box make sure it was off a 4x4. mine was doing the same thing once and it was as simple as a couple of loose bolts holding the box on. sometimes its easy to forget to check the simple stuff first.
