got the new ZZ4 in and had to go with a new flywheel. starter is pretty strained now, what is the best method to shim the starter?

I have never done it before. how do I know what size shim to use etc.???

Insert a 1/8 rod between the starter gear and the flywheel. Easiest way to do this is to take of the solenoid so that you can engage and disengage the gear by hand. bolt up the starter and check the spacing with the rod. If it's too tight, add a shim to the INSIDE hole. This will increase the distance. If its' too far away, add shims to the outside hole..

fade94, this is partially correct. it should have 1/8" gap between the starter shaft & the ring gear.

you have new engine (not reman) & a new flywheel? get a new nosecone for the starter & it should fit like a glove without shimming.

yeah a ZZ4 engine and new flexplate.

a new cone??

where I get that?

Try an auto electric shop. They should have what you need.
