1964 daily driver idea?
Hi I was wondering if this is a good idea and what it would cost me. I want to get a short box fleetside rust free with decent paint and put a 2.2L GM motor that is flexible fuel in it. Would this be a good idea?

I would use a larger engine, the 2.2 will barely move an S10. Brian

Fuel injected 4.3 V6 would be a great engine in your truck. The Vortec 4.3 makes good power and would be a fairly easy intallation. I have considered the swap myself.

Motor
The only reason I was thinking 2.2 is its flexible fuel. The way gas is going up these days It would be nice to run E85. Is there any larger fleixble fuel GM motors? Does anyone have a short fleetside for sale?

Fuel consumption increases with ethanol—not as much energy. But it’s not petroleum-based, so there’s your trade-off. If you want to save money it's not the way to go.
The difference in price does not make up for the loss of volumetric efficiency. If you are hell bent on running E85, you may want to consider a turbo'ed E85 engine. E85 is equivalent to around 105 octane so you could run at least 30psi of boost on a turbocharged E85 engine (depending on CR). Then, the efficiency will be up in the range to give it an economical advantage. Last edited by Frizzle Fry; 10-02-2005 at 02:23 PM. |

The older 2.5L is a much better engine. There is also the 3.0L version of the same, but is mainly a marine/industrial engine. The new Vortec 2800, 3500, and 4200 inlines look really appealing too. This is the direction I would be heading.

I was pondering the 4.3L swap for a while... when out shop got ahold of some marine 4V intakes for the Vortecs
I even had the 85-87 C/K 4.3L engine brackets for it... They looked like they would fit the older trucks just the same.

RE: Daily Driver:
Anybody ever cosider doing a complete electric power plant conversion on one of these old trucks? It's been in the back of my mind for a while now..... that itchy feeling when my mind wanders while I'm driving home on the crowded California not-so-freeways... kind of a yearning to explore new boundries, conquer new challenges, face impossible odds - go where few have gone before - so I got married & have't done anything more on the EV thing since. Check out these guys - apperantly everything you would need is available off the shelf! Sucking Amps Racing

Re: 1964 daily driver idea?
A 2.2L will barely move a S-10 with 4.10 gears and tiny tires.
Might as well install pedals. E85 costs more and gets worse mileage. What's the point. If you really want a flex-fuel engine you could go with a FF 5.3L

Re: 1964 daily driver idea?
You can make just about any engine run on E85 with the right carb and recurved timing. And it's a bunch cheaper than putting in a computerized engine. But to go back to running regular gas, you have to recarb and time. Either way, you lose about 10% in milage with the E85
