according to my 70 owners manual, the "4" denotes a stepside pickup. 34 would be a fleetside bed.

that 4 and 34 thing is for the model number...not VIN.

The VIN will not tell you any options, nor bed type on these trucks. Nor will it ever tell an engine size, only type.

I am confused. My owners manual has a VIN decoder in it, and that is where I got the info, so you are saying this info is not correct, even though GM had it printed?????

I don't have my 70 owners manual here with me... I'll have to look at it tomrow when i get to work. (It's in my truck)
However, if that is what it says, then yes...there is a typo in the manual.
The VIN was controlled by the feds...all VIN's of the time were 12 digit alpha numeric codes.... GM did not have the authority to add or delete digits.
That alone makes the '4' verses'34' deal not possible for the VIN.

Just curious, what happened if GM made more vehicles than a 6 digit unit number would allow????

OK, I got my 1970 Chevrolet 10 - 30 series owner's manual here now....
GM screwed up. I see a few mistakes on that. You can look at any Chevy truck VIN and it'll decode like on the vin decoder that i linked above...and model numbers will decode as the link above says....which the model number can only be found on the SPID label in the glove box.
As for what if they made more than 999999 units... it is pretty much not gonna happen, maybe due to the unions, maybe just due to not enough hrs in a work year.... but that would be pretty much not going to happen. You have to remember, the production number starts at 100001 on each plant assembly line..... so in model year 1970, there are 10 trucks (at least at one time there was 10) that was #100001 since there were 10 plants making them (including the canadian plant)

Good info guys, now where can I get engine decoders? I at least know that my block is a 350 (with a 283/327 harmonic balancer...go figure

). Also, the frame # matches the cab. Well actually, the VIN I found is on the inside of the glove box. The VIN on the door has been scaped off for some reason.

I can hardly make out any of the other #'s, but I'll keep looking.

OK, just found out that my motor is a 1973 350 from a car (F,A or X body)
Original specs - 145hp, 2bbl, manual trans., 4.001 bore, 3.48 stroke, 8.5:1 compression
haven't checked heads yet, but I'm pretty sure that it puts out more than 145 today.

It's got a 12bolt posi rearend, and I left two black marks about 15 feet long.

There are vins out there with more than 10 digits out there in many Canadian built GMC's.
Canadian trucks often had a 9 as the second character in 1967 to denote made in Canada with the rest following the typical decoders.
It is hard to make an accurate decoder for all these trucks as there are difference in many 1970 and 71 GMC vins also. In some cases the GMC trucks used the 34 to denote the box also in the vin instead of just a 4. Also GMC truck built in the Canadian, Oshawa plant... that would be assembly plant 1 in the vin decode in 1970 and 1971 had many vin sequence numbers that started at 50001 and not the typical Chevy start number of 10001 for the other assembly plants.
The Chevy's seemed to be more stable in the vin decoding usually using just the 10 characters.
The one vin posted is decoded by others correctly here by the way.
Pretty much anything anyone can post I can decode for these trucks.
The ones you gotta think about are like this..I'll make a non existent one for the brain stormers out there.
