72 5 lug axles in 68 6 lug housing

Will the 5 lug axles fit in the 68 6 lug housing? If not, is the 68 rear end (lug nut to lug nut) shorter than the 71-72s? Then that would mean you couldn't put the whole rear under a 68 either???

67 to early 70 are the same length. late 70 to 72 are the same length. So to answer your first question, No they will not fit. To answer your second question, the late 70 to 72 are only like an 1 1/2 inches wider so you can put them under your truck with no problem.

The latest 68 suburban I got was the same story. Pulled the 6 lug axles and installed the 5 lug. No problem.

I know on my 69 axels were ¾ of inch shorted then the 72. They will slide right in but the rear brakes will not work right it will move the drum out about ¾ and cause the drum to catch only half the pad.

Yes the 72 rear end will fit under your 68 truck that is the way I finally wound up doing it.

There are also a couple of members that have had there 6 lugs redrilled.

Edit "wrong link dennislbrooks posted it below"
