new gm goodrwench crate motors now require $100 core charge

well alot of you guys asked me why on earth i would have a core charge on a new engine then i wondered why too since it was new not rebuilt. well i spoke to TWO different chevy dealerships and they said delco is going to start rebuilding them so they want to get old blocks back in, however the gm goodwrench motor youre buying is brand new, i guess theyll be offering rebulit ones soon as well.

I think it is a cheap way of GM getting an extra $100 for an engine without raising the price. How many people are actually going to go through the trouble of returning a grease old engine for $100?

I had been thinking of a HT502 for the '72 the old 402 is burning and leaking more everyday. will they still charge you if the engine block is not the same. 100 bucks wouldn't cover my trip there and back! and someday I might want those matching numbers for the big redo.

502

Hey dwaite you might want to check on oil usage before you buy that HT502. I have a 502HO in my 71 that uses a qt. about every 400 to 500 miles since new. Does not smoke or leak period but oil goes bye-bye some where. Heard of many others that have the same problems with these 502s. Still I love the motor for it's power and TQ. Gm has an array of stock answers for this none of which makes much sense for brand new motors. Others that I have heard from do not have this problem--strange. Also have valve train noise that sounds like the roller lifters. Have about 5000 miles with no problems other then rear tires

So they want you to pay them to not take your very own engine. That smacks a bit of theft. If they would like to buy my core that is a different issue. Give me $100 off of their crate engine maybe.

I have had this fight with a few parts sellers. If I buy a new water pump they wanted the core back or for me to pay a core charge. I haven't had to pay it yet.

This BB used oil from the start. My dad bought it new april 72 and it would go through 1 quart in 700 miles GM said then BB its normal. After I did the top end It used 1 quart in 900 miles. Now it is leaking front back and sides. Last time I put in a 1 piece rear seal I pulled the One main cap and started to see wear, For a truck with 150,000 hard miles not to bad. I dont mind putting oil in it if it doesnt spray all over the bottom of truck and at a traffic light smoke out the pipes. I run high traction camper 9.50X16.5D bias tires now because if I stopped in a parking lot and somebody spit under my truck I would spin one tire all day trying to get goin. Maybe I will change to radials when I get the body done.

jhow, If you don't mind me asking why did you go with the 502HO instead of the HT502 for a grand less. Just for the HP rating. Also what carb did you use. Priced out a perfomer manifold and a 1411 for about $460. My truck never see's above 3200RPM even with 4.11 rear. A local GM dealer has HT502 for $4295 have not stopped by yet waiting for price on the body work first.

502

dwaite I got the HO for the upper end HP. I am using a Holley 850 CFM Vacumn Secondary carb. The motor came with a alum. dual plane already installed. Be advised that you have to run a electric fuel pump as 502s do not have fuel pump bosses. My truck was a factory BB 402. I put over 70,000 miles on it after I bought it and it still was using only about 1 qt. every 1500-2000 miles. You will like the HT for its grunt down low. I ended up going with a Eaton Posi unit. With your 4.11 gear you will not need a farm tractor!

Just curious, what type of MPG are you getting with these 502's?

Thumbs up options

if gm wants to offer the rebuilt 350's at a lower price then maybe it will be good but figure the odds.

GM has had that core charge on their new replacement 454's, but it's been $400. I thought it was BS that they were doing that and it made the $2800 motor $3200. I bought a 427 and will rebuild it myself. And yes, big block Chevy's are notorious oil-burners. Always have been.

I have had similar experiences with "core returns". Luckily, that irritating girl at the parts counter who always gives you the wrong parts will accept almost anything resembling the part as a core. When I went to get a shorty water pump for my 68 burb, I brought a used up 68 cadillac waterpump off my work bench.
In some places, for some stupid environmental reason, an engine out has to be matched by an engine in. When I bought a 472 cad motor, my core was a blown 226 inline 6 out of a 48 ford truck. They just needed a motor, any motor.
This is all off the point however, and to me it looks like GM might be stopping new production of the old standby 350's.
