Undercoating Remove or Not??
Hi all I`m asking about this lovely black crap that is sprayed all over the underside of the engine compartment so it wont rust .Now I know its their to protect the metal and all .But I have this question stuck in my head Do I want it to look really nice and shiney or dull and sticky all over. Ive worked on it a few times and I spend more time cleaning my tools. If you want pictures let me know I only cleaned the radiator support top with with my bellie and shirt It sure looks nice . Do I go clean or do I take the black crap off ??

I think it needs to come off. The trick is heat. I used a heat gun (but I have heard of using a propane torch) and a putty knife on my '56 wagon. It is a pain in the ass job, but you can't have it right until you get it done.

If you live here in nova scotia and use your truck it's a necessity to have under coat but to take it off to work on it or if it's a show truck,or never driven in bad weather conditions take it off it is awfully grimy and ugly, brake cleaner and a rag will tackle it like nothing else. Oh and my only fear with heat is it can catch on fire and it burns fairly hot.

Its true the hotter it is the easier it is to clean off or if you use a cleaner or Diesel fuel,WD-40, and o yea a few rools of towels to wipe it up. I found if I work on it after I get home from work to the heat from the motor has loosened it up a little and a little hot sunshine to helps.
So I did clean the front above the radiator .Its clean as if I just painted it. So no painting it so far. Thanks for everyones help. |

It will be messy but take it off. Undercoating is good for maby the frame but not in the engine compartment. Take it off.
