Edelbrock Carb questions
Question #1:
How bad is it to run flexible fuel tubing from the fuel pump right up to the carb? It just occurred to me that although new tubing, if it was to leak onto a hot engine and ignite... hmm, I think that'd be bad. Is this an accident waiting to happen? What is everyone using to go to their 1406 from the fuel pump? Question #2: On the throttle linkage, there is a rod that connects to the pump in the carburetor and three holes to choose from. It seems this would change the pivot point and give more or less throttle, and make the carb more fuel sensitive? What hole do you have your linkage attached to? |

I'd put the linkage in the hole that's out at the end of the arm to minimize the amount the accelerator pump moves unless your engine stumbles when you stomp on the gas.

A good mechanic should be able to bend you a hard line right to the carb, flare it and connect it with a short piece of hose.
You could also go with -6AN braided hose and fittings. Buy the chrome line and filter from Edelbrock, then cut and connect the hose from the pump to the filter. Tell me what kind of fuel pump your using and I'll tell you what you'll need. I have my throttle rod in the same location. I'm not aware that it makes a difference other than pedal feel. It would feel more responsive in the upper hole only because it pulls the linkage back easier. As long as it's adjusted to get WOT with all your pedal, it's fine where it is. Matt

I had to buy a fittion that is a 90 elbow. It was about $17 and swivels. the cheap one at shucks will screw in, but not tight. If you leave it you will discover a cracked hose like I found.

I assumed you were talking about the accelerator pump, not the throttle linkage, right?

Yes, just for kicks I called Edelbrock linkage to see what their explanation is. Your right pjmoreland, keep it in the farthest hole and move it forward if needed.

I asked Edelbrock recently to email me the manual and the setup guide for the 1406 carburetor. I can pass them your way if you need them. They used to have a link on their website to their documentation, but they got rid of it. I have a 1400 carburetor, which is an emissions approved version of the 1406. They refused to send me documentation when I told them I had a 1400 because I guess I'm not supposed to tamper with it. Then later I called and told them I have a 1406. They gave me the documentation then. What a pain!

That's the first time I've tried to use that feature of www.msnusers.com. I guess you have to have an MSN passport to see them. Send me a PM if you want the files. I'd be happy to email them to anyone who wants them.

I like this one...(scroll down to part# EDL-8126) At least you could get a little closer with a factory steel and reduce all the rubber hose.

I used some universal straight 5/8 size brake line from the parts store and some quality time with my sears tubing bender and made a hard line from pump to carb. Edelbrock has a fitting to use the 5/8 steel line for around $10. The cheapo parts store $20 double flare tools work ok too. And you can use the tubing bender around the house (good excuse for spouse). Having the old q-jet hard line helped for a template on the pump end of things.
I also have the fuel filter under the cab, maybe it will help the fuel pump last longer...

I used a cheap line made by Spectra. I bought it at Checker's. It costs about 10 bucks. It's an L-shaped piece like Fatback used but a barbed end already on it.

Got mine at Pep Boys for around $10.00 by Spectra. Better than laying out $35.00 for the Edelbrock one. Works great and looks good also.

It's 3/8" line, not 5/8.
The wrench size is 5/8 though.

I'll attach two pictures from two slightly different angles. BTW that is an Edelbrock transmission kick-down cable bracket towards the back of my Edelbrock manifold (yes Vic Jr. made some money off of me). I recommend that bracket too if you are switching from a 2bbl to a 4bbl like I was.

I recently aquired a 1407 from the x-monster .. it came off a 440. I figure it needs freshening but, past that, does anyone think I would have any problems running it on a fresh but mostly stock 350, or should I hold off until I get a set of headers and a cam for the motor?

For those that got the Spectra part that I need, do you know the part number? I've been calling around (instead of driving with gas prices) and haven't found anyone that knows what I'm looking for. A part number would be a great help to see who around here has one in stock.

I don't know the part number, but you may be able to find Spectra on the web.
