tie rod ends help
I have the McGaughy's brake conversion kit for my 66. Well where my tie rod joint fits in to the spindle it is loose (with the factory 66 tie rod ends). So I got the late model tie rod ends but the shaft where it screws in to the tie rod is different sizes??? What do i need to do??????????

CPP makes an adapting sleeve to use 70 and below inner tie rods with 71 and up outer tie rods. I just looked cant find it right now, might wanna call them.

i used the exact same thing from mcgaughy's and used new Moog tie rod ends. i will look and see if i still have the boxes. they fit fine no slop and threaded right on. You can call Mcgaughys and ask them They answered a different question I had and in fact sold me a single part out of a kit instead of making me buy the whole thing.

I just did this on my '69 with '72 spindles. Not only are the '71 and newer tie rod ends larger but the threads are opposite from the '70 and older. I could not reuse my original '69 inner ends as the theads were the same direction as the new outers. I had to use '65-'70 outers for inners to get the right thread direction. Nice pieces though.

another choice if you are able
Takes about 30 minutes per end to convert an 11/16" RH thread to a 5/8" x 18 LH thread as is on the 65-70.
There is sufficient metal --- use the tie rod end that is for the spindle year. It can be done by hand. On a bench grinder---carefully remove the existing RH threads down to the point where the old thread path is just visible. Try to retain symmetry --even tho the die will clean it up. Champher the starting end slightly for the die. Oil while you cut. Or bring them over. |
