1950 hood alignment prob

My hood won't sit down tight at the cowl, am I missing a spring to pull it down into place? or are my hinges worn out? They don't seem to have alot of slop around the shoulder bolts. After I close the hood I have to push the back end of it down but it springs back up 3/4" or so. Thanks for your help, Shaun.

I am not even going to attempt to use the stock hinges on my hood. Yesterday I went to a salvage yard & bought a Le Sabre hood to install the hardware on Buford.

It's a forward tilt hood......I hope it works.

I used this note also to align my hood. It's better but still not right! Let me know how it works for you.

I used the same instructions and it helped but still not satisified with the outcome. I have tried removing the springs and it fits the cowl but then you have to use a prop rod to hold the hood up!!!!! I saw a add in street rodder for a fix it, but the guy is in the flood area of La. and his phone is WET. I will give him a call next month! Did you flatten the rivets on the hinge when you had them off, that tightened mine up and are like new.

The guy I have been talking to is David and his email address is;
hydeprod@bellsouth.net
He has some lap top communications and has been keeping in touch with me, but he is still out of his shop. I am waiting for him to tell me when he can deliver his product, we will wait as long as it takes !!
Ask him to send you a FAX and take a look at the product I think you will agree this is the answer to our hood problems!! The assembly uses existing bolt locations on firewall and hood which makes it very simple !!
Tell him when you contact him that the guy with the 55 1st series in Tucson sent you.

Shaun, just for fun did you try the hood without the springs, does it sit down on the cowl?

H W, that is the cost of the hood prop that this guy in La. makes fo our Pick up. This prop removes the springs and is bolted to the firewall and the front hood locking mechanism and the slider is bolted to the hood where the upper spring attaches.
I will let you know next week when I get it installed how it works, especially if the rear of the hood sits down on the cowl.

When you get it on, takes some pics for us!
It'll be a while before I'm ready to go back on with my hood so, I haven't thought much about the options yet (other than if I stayed with the traditional method, I'd get new hinges).

Re: 1950 hood alignment prob

~~~ O K, boys and girls,
The problem with the hood not fitting the rear at the cowl has been rectified!!
I think to date, this is one of the best $100.00 I have spent on this project.
The hood now closes very easy and the spring noise is gone and it fits the cowl, what more could I ask!
For all of you using the stock springs and having this problem with the hood not closing tight at the cowl look into purchasing a hood holder from Hyde Products, as advertised THEY WORK!
Total time to install about 1 hour as I have a GMC and I had to drill a 1/4" hole in the stiffener that holds the spring pin for the front lock, or whatever it is known as.
VERY simple to install.
I think Dave is back up and running after the storm in Sidell La. and is able to ship his products. If you need further information just send me a PM or Dave at hydeprod@bellsouth.net, you will be glad your hood problems are over with................................
Now how about that new fuel injection set up !!!!!
Hot Rods are never finished !!!
Re: 1950 hood alignment prob
The hood opens and closes very nice now that the springs are not causing any binding. 1st step remove the springs and get the hood to set just right (alinged), and open and latch, with that completed bolt on the new hood prop. If the hood does not set on the cowl with out the springs, you still need to work on your alingnment, the prop will not cure a alingnment problem! There is one more step when you open the hood you must turn the prop 1/4 turn to lock it in the up position. To close you lift the hood a inch or so and turn the prop 1/4 turn to close. Now that the springs are removed close the hood gently onto the latch and the weight of the hood should set the latch to lock it
Re: 1950 hood alignment prob
I have a slightly different problem. My hood fits tight and is align properly, but I have to slam the hood. Seems the spring in the hood latch is broke. should the spring keep the latch forward (towards the cab of the truck as your looking at it) or towards the front bumper side of the cowl. I have looked all over for a new spring, it appears I may have to fabricate one. Just wanted the correct orentation prior to taking it apart and making a spring. Have any info or ideas?
