Don't think so, you won't have wipers

Hi all ,

sorry to hi-jack this thread but I have question :

will an upper bearing from a 1979 non-tilt column fit into a 1982 tilt column ?

I'm asking this because I still have a non tilt column in good shape , and I'm unable to find any reference number for the upper bearing that has to go into a tilt column ( mine is toasted )...

I asked this already once on this forum but I have never had any answer ...

many Thanks

the Baron

Baron,
If no one knows the answer here tak a look on Ebay. There are a couple of guys that sell rebuilt tilt columns for our trucks. I'm sure you could get the corrrect answer from them. One goes by steeringcolumnologist and I think his name is Wayne...

Baron, I've got a few bearings, along with other goodies for tilt columns. I've found that it's best to replace both at the same time. If you are close to a GM Dealer, the PN is 7844651. You get the rack, bearings, and races.

WOW !

to N2trux & 85X3

Thanks a lot , I'll finally be able to fix that column !

So , you advise me to replace the two bearings ( upper & lower ) , I guess I'll do that ...

I have the 1980 GM Light Duty Truck Service Manual , with the whole procedure to open the whole column , looks like a nest of wires , needles , springs & other

As I never did it , will see if I'll win or loose

greetzzzzz

Do yourself a favor and get a lockplate depressor. Usually at NAPA on the Lysle tool shelf. Also get a pivot pin remover. Use a phillips screwdriver to release the tilt spring. The spring cap is the piece with a square hole. Push it in and turn counter-clockwise. I do tilt columns quite frequently. Piece of cake with the right tools.
