Post Power Steering Problem Q?

My Power Steering quit working and I am looking for some advice on what component to replace first. Is it more likely to be a bad pump or bad steering gear?

Might need some more details...like:
No assist?
Squealing?
Did you check the fluid?
Any work done recently? To the p/s assm.

If the pump is not making pressure, take
the back of the fitting (the one with the
high pressure hose fits into) out of the
housing and clean that part really good,
there is a little screen in there that might
just be plugged up. There is a big screen
behind this. Could also be the pump is just
shot.

I would blindly blame the pump thoguh.

if you fluid is up then I would look to the pump as the gear boxes usually don't go bad. They may wear out a bit and get loose or leak but thats about all that goes bad on them. The pump however can stop pumping out pressure.

Id blame the pump first its cheaper,pull it apart.Ive never had a bad pump,had some sloppy leaky boxes before though.but never a pump go out,they are easy to take apart,and not very expensive for another,or a rebuild kit.Any beginning trucker can do one!!!
