Ok, Dumb question of the day. Can a regular muncie or gm 4 speed from early camaro's, chevelle's, nova's, be made to fit in 2 wd trucks. Thinking about that with a 402 in my 72. Thanks.
Ps. modifying mounting brackets isn't a big deal for me, if needed. Also has it been done (I'm sure it has to have been with this bunch) and are there any pictures.

Anything will fit if you use a big enough hammer.

The shifter will be in the middle of your bench seat. Got bucket seats? I'm sure someone makes a relocator for the linkage. That's why most truck manual transmissions are top loaders.

I use to have a camaro 4 spd in the truck. It is not Heavy Duty enough to handle the weight. I went through 3 of them before i went back to a TH350.
It fit fine. Might have to adjust the length of the drive shaft.

We have a Muncie M22 behind GM's 290 HP crate motor in my sons truck and its lots of fun. Using the Mr. Gasket Truck shifter, thereâ€™s no problem hitting the seat; however we do have the buddy buckets.

Any of th M20 (LARGE counter shaft shaft -...no..did not stutter - heavy duty has 1" counter shaft shaft), M21, or M22. Or...T10's will work. Avoid Saginaws...for anything with HP or torque...you will tear them up.

Hurst has a competition Plus shifter that works with a bench seat....with no problems.

You'd be surprised how the Muncies just bolt right in. I put a Muncie close ratio 4 speed in my 78 Chevy truck that came from a 69 SS Nova. Bolted right in, input and output shafts were of the same size and spline counts as the stock truck 3 speed so the clutch and driveshaft yoke were correct. Tranny length was the same. I had mine swapped out in under 2 hours including cutting the hole in the floor for the shifter. Drove that one like that for 6 years.

I agree about the saginaw statement i had mine in my 307 and i just put another one in, but I absolutely bagged on the first one I had and it only failed because I tried doing a reverse burnout and broke a bunch of ****. But ya the conversion is really and i used the hurst shifter and it works great with a bench seat.

Yes, avoid the Saginaw. I have had mine rebuilt twice and it has gone down again.

A buddy was just telling me that years ago he mounted a 3 speed overdrive tail housing to a 4 speed and made a 4 speed overdrive. I have not heard of that, but it sounds like a good deal. Anyone done that?

HEY, that sounds like the perfect combination for my stepside with the caddy mill. any info guys?

The overdrive is extremely on the thin side of life. Definitely will NOT hold up to a Caddy mill with all that torque. In fact, they were never installed, from the factory, in anything bigger than a 283. Sorry dude.

just wondering if you could tell me where he got this rebuilt and what parts were replaced because when I tried to rebuild my last saginaw I was told there is no such thing as hard parts for these saginaws anymore, so I had to buy a rebuilt one that was done about 5 years ago. Sorry for hijacking your thread also

They are around...just have to find a shop that specializes in manual transmissions.

gears4less? Something like that.

Ask the companies that rebuild larger truck manual trans....they have the info.
