dana 44 help

Heres what happened my brother was pulling out some trees with m,y truck and he twisted off the left fornt u-joint. I was lloking it over trying to fiqure out why it broke . The font has a lockering in it could that be why? The front left axle acts like it isnt connected to the carrier and it just spins with out moveing the driveshaft or the other axle. But when he was pulling the tree he had all four wheels spining so i dont know exactly what happen but the yokes for the u jonits are both bent and needing replace if any one could help identify what went wrong it would be greatly apriecated.

Thanks

sounds like the inner axle broke on the driverside. but before it went the u-joint was starting to deform. time for a new inner/outer axle shaft for the driver side. Be a good time (if not all ready done) to upgrade to a larger u-joint and aftermarket axle shafts that don't neck down. The neck down part is probably where the inner axle broke. Was your brother rotating the front tires from side to side?

My brother calims that he had the wheels straight and that it was in the low side of first. Where do i get bigger u joints. For the axles I'll probaby just got ot a junk yard and get some. Do you think the locker had anything to do with it breaking?

Thanks

Wink

This is just a guess, but I think that pulling trees out of the ground with your truck had a lot to do with why the front axle parts detonated!!

In my 1972 K20 factory owners manual I think it says that, "you can pull down a house with a Chevy K20", "tow an african elephant on it's back up the White House front steps with a GMC K2500", but use caution when pulling full grown trees out of the ground, driveline breakage may occur."

Just a guess,

Some breakage happens from "shock" loads while it sounds like you just reached the stress point of the material(shafts/ears). You need to find axle shafts from 73 and newer dana44, they will have the larger u-joint(297x v. 260X). I think the locker did it's job.

Thanks for the help,
