'67 - '72 Fleet Trucks

Anyone have a special ordered fleet truck from the railroad, logging company, forest service or state? I would be interested in seeing a closeup of the glove box door. I am mostly interested in Central Office Production Orders and how the glove box door options were listed.

That would be interesting. I know some of these trucks had to have been ordered and built through the Chevrolet Central Office Production Order system and I want to see if there was any difference in the option sheet on the glove box door sticker.

My orange '68 stepside has some earmarks of a fleet truck: Bright Omaha Orange color, tool box across bed, originally had 7.00 x 17.5 rims & tires (so employees wouldn't steal them), 292 L6, SM 465 4-speed, radio delete, manual everything, no A/C, and a mysterious rubber grommet filling a hole in the center of the roof. For either a spot light, gumball machine (rotating beacon), or some (then) Hi-Tech VHF or UHF antenna, and a trail of holes from self-tapping machine screws from the hole in the roof to under the dash for wire clips, no doubt. Orange was a favorite of the old Southern Pacific RR, as well as Calif Dept of Transportation -- later called "Cal-Trans." Truck was originally from Southern Calif. I bought it in Pasadena in '73. Build sheet fragments from under the seat listed Felix Chevrolet of LA.

Here is a picture of the one that my panel has. It was a former government vehicle of some sort indicated by the paint "special" and some of the other options. Publication unit, vehicle marking unit, decalcomania unit, perm A/F unit, and negative & photo witch I believe that the federal government reqired for the vehicles that they purchased. What I am trying to see in these pics is anything really different about the glove box sticker. The paint was labeled as "Special" but what about the other options? They look pretty much the same. What I mean is there was no special designation for options that were not available on that particular model of truck. As an example: if John's '67 panel had been a special fleet order with a 396 (assuming the 396 L47 engine was available in '67) would it have listed "04L47XX" in the left column or 79L47XX or something else?

I noticed that the '71 we are parting has only the three digit code in the left column ie "L47". When did they switch to using only the three digit code?

I think that it must have been a 67 only thing. My 67 Custom Camper that I have here for sale has the same numbers. The 68-72s are not that way. It is my understanding that Government vehicles had to have everything listed on the glove box plaque. For example my panel has decalcomania unit listed 3 times only eack one has a different letter after the number. 9909R, 9909X, and 9909Y. Other options listed is 4K19AC GM Air Inj Reactor, 9938A Deadner & Dust eq, 9920A Traffic Hazzard Lamp, 9907B Tag Unit, 9913B Negative & Photo, and etc. The non government 67 custom camper doesn't list options like that. Wes, That would be a very interesting comparison with a standard '67 similarly equiped. My '68 has the long number just like the '67's. I don't recall the '69 but the '71 has the short number. I am thinking that '67 and '68 all had the longer number. Now if I can only figure out the significant of those extra numbers!

Well then I wonder if it is a mid year 68 thing. I have a 69 here that has the short numbers and the build sheets for 2 68s and they have the short numbers... Interesting WES

Don't know if this will help or not, this is off a '68 Burb that the build sheet says was built on April 20th, 1968, and has the long number. It's not a COPO or anything special, except for being a 50th.

It's hard to see, but the build sheet has the short #

And is it a '67 thing that has the paint code in one of the top boxes? Just wondering.

Pritch, Thanks for the reminder...I looked up my 50th Longhorn that was built on July 3, 1968 and it has the long number. So they must have changed to the short numbers after the 4th of July in the Fremont plant at least. I thinking a '69 change to short numbers unless somebody has a truck that says otherwise. The new cars used to hit the showrooms on September 27 so production had to be switching to '69's by early August at least.

I also noticed that the '67 glove box sheet was different. It was brown and had the color in the top whereas the '68's were blue and had wheelbase where the paint was on the '67. Just a note I'm sure you already noticed.

EDIT: Wait a minute...John's '67 glove box sticker looks blue...what gives here. Did each plant have its own sticker? I wonder if there are any other colors out there?

Me thinks the "non-blue" colors are the diffrences in the printers ink that was not very fade resistant (ie cutting corners, no QA, cheaper priced inks), as I doubt ALL these sticker where printed by the same printer, but from various printers around the USA.

Just my 2 cents.

... I have no idea what the letters are around the actual RPO code stand for. Haven't come accross any doc's describing it nor anyone here explaining it. They are not necessiarily the same suffix for the same plant in the same year either.

From what I have collected, the RPO's are printed either as 3 (ie Z53), 6 (ie 4Z53BB) , or 7 (ie 04Z53BB) characters. In the 3 examples they are all represent the RPO Z53 Gauges option.

There are also the oddball 5 digit + alpha as shown in the pictures by John Fabris, RPO 79886G. These are Special Equipment from outside of GM which may extend the vehicles delivery time. In this case, 9886 is the option number which is titled (according to a 1969 Dealer Data Book) as "Mirror: Inside rear view non glare" on 40-60 models. I see John's is a 1967.

I also see it is Year and plant independent. Here is a small example of what I have found. This below should do most of the talking:

I'm going to try this in HTML formatting, hope it works!? Crud html tables didn't work. Here it is manually for example on a Z53 Cluster Gages:

Year Janesville St. Louis Freemont
1967 4Z53BC 4Z53BB <missing it>
1968 4Z53BD 4Z53HH 04Z53GP
1969 4Z53EF 4Z53AA Z53
1970 Z53 Z53 Z53
1971 Z53 1Z53AK Z53
1972 Z53 1Z5320 Z53

You can see the diff's there. It's suppose to be in column format.
One significant change is that in 1972 the 2 digit suffix, if present, is now primarily numeric (ie the "20" in 1Z5320 for 1972 Janesville).

-Roger

pritch, thanks for the pics on the glovebox vs. the build sheet. Isn'that interesting?!

Wonder why your Z62 option (Custom Deluxe) is blank on the SPID. Hmmm.

I wondered about that too. I didn't know what it was until someone posted a list of options. I wondered if it had something to do with it being a 50th, since from what I think I understand, Burbs didn't really have a CST package, and yet 50th Burbs have the CST badge?
