Talking '65 c10 - rear internal drum brake parts

dadgum parts.

so, I have a '65 c10 lwb stepside. I'm trying to setup the '66 and newer e-brake system. I've had a bit of a time getting all the correct rear drum internal parts assembled to make the e-brake thing work.... so, yet another bump in the road today...

so - it seems I have all the parts I need now... well, except I don't have all of the correct parts it seems.

It would seem that the used 'parking brake strut rod' that I have is too long.

I installed the parking brake lever onto the brake shoe with the clip (the washer was a bust - wrong size hole and no space for it anyway - for all I know this part is wrong also)... put in the parking brake strut rod with the spring - which then spread everything WAY apart. I even tried taking just that assembly of the brake shoes, the parking brake strut rod & spring with thesprign and self adjsuter doodad on at the bottom and checkign if it would fit in the drum - no go.

This makes me think it is very wrong.

The strut rod that I have is flat.

The ones in the pictures I have, and have seen have a curved end - I'm guessing this one is shorter?

I'm irritated... everytime I think I have all the stuff I need... *grrrrr*.

The funny thing is I didn't even get mad earlier, I just said to myself 'of course it isnt' gonna work, this figures.'

Any chance on any of the FLAPS* having these internal rear brake doodads... even if they have to order them?

If not, then what are my options?

I know some of the vendors sell some used parts... but most of them have a hard enough time trying to read the part numbers on repops and NOS stuff.

Anyhoo - any help is appreciated.

old trucks are irratating, but the wife says that is why we do it. if it were easy, it would be no fun, and not challenging. i say to her, it could be a LITTLE easier than this!!!

my parts look the same - the rod is the same shape and length...

I am thinking maybe I was doing something wrong, which is very possible... or the parking brake lever while attached to the brake shoe is not doing it's full range of movement...

what is the range of movement for the parking brake lever when it's attached to the shoe? Does it stuff in all the way behind it, or what?

It sounds like your rear cables are stuck or there is not enough travel, the e-brake link lever/arm shuld retract back behind the shoe when released, if the strut is spreading the shoes apart there is not enough slack somehow. That is how it applies the e-brake, by manually spreading the shoes apart. So in essence the brake is being "applied" somehow by the rear cables being stuck or some cables are too short. You do have '66 rear cables,, right? Brian

I had not gotten to the cables yet.

I had the shoes, the adjuster thing, the spring at the bottom above the adjuster - the parking lever attached to the shoe, the spreader bar and anti rattle spring for the spreader bar...

I am thinking the parking brake lever wasn't tucking in all the way behind the shoe... but since I had no idea how it was supposed to be, I didn't want to start whacking on things.

64fleetside - my cables are from American Classic - their part no. and description:

part no. :BR1734 / 1966-72 Brake cable - rear, 127 inch wheelbase, with coil springs, with TH400, 1/2 ton, 2WD, pickup, 40 inch length, 30 inch casing


I have a long bed, 127 inch wheelbase stepside...

update / edit : Upon further review! The 'teeth' on the parking brake lever are bent(where the speader bar sticks into)... this might explain why it wasn't ducking in behind the brake shoe.

I was so irritated, I didn't catch it before.

part no: 5462672-L

I'm guessing the L is for 'left' or driver side, which is the one I was working on.

A few good steady blows with a good hammer to bend 'em back in line? yes/no?

Yeah if something looks out of whack, it can be straightened w/a hammer & hard surface. The spreader bar can be installed both ways but only one way is correct, the slot is a little wider on the end that fits the lever, bar catches both shoe & lever on that end. I have seen a couple I had to enlarge the slot w/a file somewhat to get to fit properly. Brian

so - I whacked the offending part with a BIG hammer one blow at a time, then checked it out... I had a big flat piece of metal laying around for 'whammo' surface.

So... hoping I have all the parts now, maybe next time I get to it, it'll all work.
