Dual dash speakers: just a plate?

I've been looking at those dual dash speakers that go in place of the one dash speaker. I got to thinking, are they basically just a plate with a bracket and a pair of small speakers? If so, couldn't I just fab something up myself?

I fabbed up a piece of 3/4 inch particle board with 2 4" mid ranges on it using the stock brackets for support....

Sweet, then I won't spend $40 for 30 watt speakers and a plate. So the stock brackets will work fine? I don't know about particle board, but I was thinking a piece of sheet metal or aluminum or something to that effect.

either or will do... I just used the stock brackets and mounted them to it then back to the dash...

I have 2 12's behind the seat. 2 4" midranges in the dash. 2 tweeters in the old ac vents. 2 tweeters and 2 5 1/4" midranges built on a custom panel in the back cab corners..

2 amps under the seat.

Right now I'm thinking of putting my Pioneer CD player in it, two 4" in the dash, a pair of 6.5" I have in my other car in the truck's kick panels, then in a month or so I'll probably pick up a 12" woofer for behind the seat after I move the tank. But the old AC vents do sound like a good place for some more stuff. Thanks for the help.
