Air Pressure Gauge?

Alright guys, just went and picked up my "new" 68, shortbed stepside yesterday, and I was cruising around town, having a great time, when I realized not only did I have the deluxe gauge set with the tach and everything else, but I have an air pressure gauge in there? What is that all about? Air pressure in what? I was going to trace the wires/lines, but it was already dark. I've never heard of such a gauge. I always thought the fourth little gauge was a dummy.

could be previous owner installed airshocks// only real way is to trace them out

Dash probably came from a C30-air brakes.

Inst panel probably came from a C/40 or bigger truck (C/30 couldn't be had with air brakes)
This is assuming it is s stock looking guage. It may have been plumbed for air shocks or if it has air bags...either the overload type, or the slam it on the ground type.

Here are a vouple pics of a stock one I grabbed out of a C/60 tractor (semi...not farm stuff) locally and restored. I sold it to some one on here who was going with air bags. No idea who nor if it has been put into use. Last I heard his wife was sick of tripping over it.

Speaking of guages & stuff. I just painted my Bezel a semi gloss black. Looks like Portsmod's at the moment. ( sweet lookin truck, I must say) Question is. Is that Chrome in a Rattle-Can stuff anygood? I wouldn't mind using some if it's not junk.

Thank you, I think I am going to enjoy it.

Thanks guys. All that makes sense, now I just have to wonder why somebody put a cluster out of a big truck in my truck. The guy that had it was an older man, I doubt he had intentions of air bags, but maybe it did have some helpers in the back or something at one time. One last thing, that extra gauge hanging off the dash down there is a vacuum gauge, what is the purpose of that? For tuning or what? The truck is all stock, including the motor and carb. Never seen anybody tune with a vacuume gauge. Just curious is all. Thanks

If you have a Haynes manual for the truck, its got some vacuum tuning tips in it. It can tell you when you are getting close to needing new rings and other stuff that I can't remember. Seemed like it would be handy if you knew how to use it. Nice truck BTW. I like that dash. Jeff.

Very nice Stepper. That gauge port was used for Blank, Vacuum or Air Pressure (C40 +). I have a gauge cluster with the Air Pressure gauge that I will probably be replacing with a Vacuum gauge.

Welcome to the Board.

The vacuum gauge can be used to get the best gas mileage and for tuning. Your highest vacuum reading is at idle. As you press on the ga$ pedal you lose vacuum.

One way to tell if is out of a big truck is by the fuel gauge, instead of having brake and temp at the bottom of the gauge, it will say tandem lock and overspeed. That is if the PO didn't change the fuel gauge when they put it in. Randy

I am feeling real stupid. I am looking at my Tach / Air Pressure gauge cluster and I can't find any of those words. Where are these words written, printed, stamped, ? Face of the gauge, back of the gauge, behind the bezel, wherever?

I believe it is embossed on the red warning light lenses in the fuel gauge.

You should be able to see it during bulb check when you first turn your igniton swich to the "on" position.

Yes, take the two bulb sockets out of the cluster behind the fuel gauge and you can hold it up in the light to see or you can use a flashlight. Randy
