I keep seeing the ad for that quick oil drain kit on TV, and it seems like a great idea, but I question how well it drains everything from the pan. Has anyone installed or had any experience with them? I definately like the less mess aspect of it.

I put one on my truck last change. I'll tell you how it is when I hit the next change, heh. (Still about 2500 mi off.)

Not sure I know what you're talking about - is this the one with the wierd valve you can open to drain the oil? Or am I thinking of something else?

It's two pieces (three if you count the dust cap for the valve) - one that replaces the drain plug in the pan and a special hose.

Simply put, to install it, on your next oil change, instead of putting the drain plug back in, you'd install the valve. Put the dust cover on it and that's it. Then, on the next oil change, you remove the dust cover and screw the hose attatchment on. It's basically an overgrown tire valve; when you screw the hose on, it pushes the center of the valve in, and oil flows out. No more worrying about crossthreading drain plugs or messing with wrenches under there...that's the idea, at least...

Yes, it was the Fram. What I wondered is if the valve is made so that the pan drains completely? I haven't seen one yet, so haven't had the chance to look at one up close. I like the concept of not getting my hand covered with hot, black oil every time I change my oil though. Let me know how you like it.

I just changed my oil with the one from FRAM. Took a long time for the oil to drain. The actual hole is very small and I'm not sure that all of the oil came out. My 2 cents.

I am thinking about putting the old plug back in next time around.

Not to cause problems or anything, but what is so hard about holding a wrench on a bolt and turning? You have to do it once every 3,000 miles. I don't see wasting money on that hose thing.

Eh, I figure $15 or so at Wallyworld will eventually make up for itself in paper towel bills.

It is made by Fram. Not the worst company, but certainly not the best..

I've seen some similar things that were made in the 70's & 80's that had different type of pit-cock type valves on them with different hose attachments, and while they did keep your hands clean, they don't get the bottom sludge out of the pan. Plus for those who worry about clearance from obstacles (lowriders, rock-crawlers) this is just one thing that's gonna' get caught. On the other hand if you just don't like getting dirty hands, it's a way out.

Won't your hands still get dirty when changing the oil filter, or have they come up with a drain for that ,too? I couldn't resist that one!

LOL Dan69! You just made a very good point with that one! I remember those old pet-cock drains, they stuck out from the pan a ways. Don't know, but seems like the cap that goes over the Fram drain probably doesn't stick out much farther that the original bolt head on the plug. You made a good point though, too bad there isn't a way to drain the filters before removing them.
