What B/U light switch to use with van column... - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Got the 700r4 installed and working this weekend, but the van tilt column has major clearance issues between the neutral safety/back up light switch and the dash column support bracket. Is there a lower profile switch anyone has found that will work?

I have not done this mod. Yet. Reading up on it in the FAQ's there is a post about re-locating the switch to the original location. Well written post to complete with pics.

Most people do relocate the N/S and Reverse Lamp switch down lower (as in original location) to avoid this problem. Also the wires fit that way. See the FAQ for a "how to" regarding the Van column retro fit.

I recently re-located my switch.. It ain't totally pretty, but all I used was a drill & a hack saw. I hack sawed teh large slot on the outer column. drilled the small holes for the mounting screws. drilled 3 or 4 small holes in the ends between the hack saw cuts and pryed the piece out to get the slot made, then drilled a hole big enough for the switch piece to fit into the inner tube part. to get the distance I measured from the top of the column to the switch location on my old one and transferd that distance to the van column.

Thanks for the help, I didn't want to , but I guess I will pull the column and cut the tube to make it work. The 700 swap was simple. I should have done it long ago. It works really well. I used a suburban donor for all parts except the column. $400 canadian to get it all working. As I said, had I known how easy it would be, I would have done it long ago.
