Chevy vs GMC
I know that it's been discussed, but I can't locate the search function...
The sheet metal is the same, the engine compartment and dash electrical etc. are different but what else varies between a GMC and Chevy (60-66). Is the running gear and suspension the same? I had a front hub go out on my GMC and was able to find another GMC hub, but would a Chevy hub have worked? |

Uhm, off the top of my head I can only think of the grill, hood, wiring, the cab, door sills, steering wheel (GMC logo), exterior trim and emblems, and the tailgate. Zenish is right, most Chev's had coils and GMCs were leaf, but either could be ordered with either suspension. GMC's also were the only trucks to have the GMC V6 engines, and their power steering setup is similiar to what the early corvettes use - a hydraulic ram assist. Come to think of it now, my frame has a riveted brace for this, which would also make it different from Chevys.
My guess is yeah, a Chevy hub probably should work just fine. Alot of things interchange, and those that don't can still be fabricated to work. |

If your GMC was bought in Canada, it's pretty much Chevy with GMC styling. My '65 has coils all around, and came with a straight six.

As for the original question... Canadian built GMC is the same suspension for sure. Dunno for south of the border.

Thanks for the responses. I have a '66 LWB, Fleetside, 1/2 ton, 2 wheel drive. For some reason the front hub cracked around the entire circumference just at the front of the outer bearing. As it was my son's daily driver, I needed a repair ASAP. I was able to locate a front hub and drum from a '62 that worked after changing out the brake drum for the adjustable brakes (tough rivets). I was thinking that because Chevy's are so much more prevalent, if I couldn't switch out with Chevy parts next time something like this happened. The brake drum was stamped Canada, eventhough it's a good ol' U S of A truck. Wonder if it's been switched out before????

Hay newbe351, you are a member of the Yahoo! Groups 6066 GMC Bunch right? I know I have seen your handle there.
1960-1962 GMC & Chevy used the same chassis & supension, torsiopn bar in front and coils on the rear of 1/2 & 3/4 ton trucks, leaf 1 ton & Bigger. 1963-1966 GMC had heaver frames leaf springs in the rear ans coils up front on all models. that had a different rear axle that Chevy. 1963-1966 chevy trucks used coils springs front & rear on 1/2 & 3/4 trucks, and Leaf in 1 ton and bigger in the rear. NO you could not get a chevy or GMC with opne or the other then, not tell 1967 when Both trucks came off the same lines, the supension could be mixed. Canadian GMC & Chevy used the same as Chevy for all years 1960-1966. Body as other have stated. Frizzle Fry, The GMC Big Block V6 line of engine were built by GMC as truck engines, they came in the following sizes, 305, 351, 401, 478, & 702 Twin Six V12. ;ater they mixed some parts and came out with two more, the 379 & 432. they also built a 60 degree V8 the 637. Dieael version were 351, 478 & 637. They may have been built in Pontiac MI but they are GMC Built Truck Engines.

Didn't the GMC trucks have different optional engines, like a V6?

61burb,
This is the first time I have hear that one, maybe it's a differance in the year truck they come off of. I know GMC sold Heavier trucks that Chevy, but most of that was do to the weight of the engines & frames. bpmcgee, GMC Came standard with the 305 V6 in all light trucks from 1960-1966. in 1966 there was an option of the 351 V6. in 1964-66 you could also opt for the Chevy Inline six. see my last reply for more about the engines or maybe even my website, the 6066 GMC Guy.

Re: Chevy vs GMC
I have noticed standard cab Chevy trucks sometimes didn't have the sound deadeneder sprayed nside the doors like the Custom cab trucks, maybe all the GMC got the soundproofing also. Brian
