Stepside or Fleetside, which weighs more?

Just been wondering what the weight difference between the stepside beds and the fleetsides are? Any ideas? My first thought was that the stepside is lighter but I could be wrong. Anyone ever weighed both on a scale?

Thanks!

I wonder how those numbers were derived? Like were the trucks actually weighed or is that the factory guess.

My guess would be fleetside. Tailgate and header panel are longer, therefore weigh more, there is also more bedwood than in a stepside, (Does a steel bed floor weigh more than a wood one??) fleetside bedsides are double walled whereas a stepside has single walled bedsides, two fenders and a step. I don't think the fenders and steps weigh as much as the outside wall of a fleetside bed.

Looks like a difference of 38lbs, the fleet being the heavier. In the real world -- I would say that is insignificant.

you might make up for it in aerodynamics anyway.

Hell, thats less than the weight of a full tank. Gas is 6# per gallon. 114# for a full tank....

You could also get creative w/the bed floor using aluminum or maybe that new recycled plastic ['wood' stuff. The aluminum is lighter @ a significant cost. I'm not sure about the other stuff but those are a couple of options to lighten things up.

If you had a step bedside, you could compare it to one of my fleet bedsides on a scale & see what the diff erence is.

I had to weigh my 69 SWB Stepside in order to get my tag in California. With 1/4 tank of gas, it weighed 3600lbs.

Yeah right now it is just cheap white pine with a rubber mat. It can't get much lighter or functional than that.

I'm just considering a fleet because you can tub a fleet alot easier with a cleaner look...

Maybe I can find someone to trade beds straight up.

You wouldnt want the bed wood trust me, its just cheap pine. If I can't trade out for another bed I may part it out. Still trying to decide.

IT'S BEEN MY EXPERIANCE (AFTER SELLING OVER A DOZEN SHORT BEDS OVER THE LAST 20 YEARS) THAT SHORT FLEETS ARE WORTH 2 TO 3 Xs AS MUCH AS SHORT STEP BEDS. I GUESS THERES JUST MORE DEMAND FOR THEM. JOHN
