Exclamation HELP! External to internal voltage regulator/alt swap

I was doing the external voltage regulator / alternator to internal voltage regulator/ alternator swap that is in the FAQ section and ran into a problem.

I have the red, white and blue wires he mentions in the FAQ, but I also have a black wire that was connected to the small post on the back of the old alternator. Where does this black wire hook up to?

I hooked up the blue wire to the #1 tab (driver-side tab) on the new alternator and the red wire to the post on the back of the new alternator, and then I ran a jumper from the big post to the #2 tab (passenger-side tab) on the new alternator. I just capped the white wire.

I am just wondering what the black wire that was hooked to the small post on the old alternator did and what I should do with it on the new set-up?

Help! I don't want to run the truck until this is remedied. If I read the FAQ wrong and did the wrong wire hookups please advise.

Thanx in advance
Dano

been so long I can't remember the colors and locations... I actually took my harness apart and removed something like 20 ft of wire when i update4d to an int reg unit.
Your black wire is a ground... I do remember grounding it to a mounting bolt when I did my last truck.

alternator wiring

Here is a website that shows how to wire the new alternator . I bekieve you have the blue wire and the short red wire going to the same terminal on the alternator unless I misread your post. The blue wire goes to the turn on terminal that energizes the field and the red wire goes to the internal regulator that senses system voltage. If I remember correctly the red wire is nearest the large terminal.

Got this from www.oldengine.cor/unfaq/10si.htm

1 The large "BATT" terminal which gets conected to your battery positive.
Run a new 10 gage wire to the battery positive.

Get a repair pig-tail plug from the auto parts store to connect the wires to the
alternator

2 The #1 Terminal. (Marked with a "1" on the case of the alternator)
This terminal is used to connect to the dash light. Us the
brown wire from the wiring harness here.

3 The #2 Terminal. (Marked with a "2" on the case of the alternator)
This terminal is used to exite the 10si into operation. Connect it to the "Batt"
on the Alternator.

4 You can discard the rest ot the wires or just tape them out of the way.

I have converted several truck and this works great.

Good luck,
Matthew

Thanx for the responses everyone!

I hooked the black wire to the bolt on the alt case for ground. (like "RageNRat" did on the FAQ page)

I wanted to keep using the rubber boot for the big post on the alt, so I ran the red jumper wire through the boot also.

Truck fire up fine, ammeter is looking good and no one can tell I swithched over becuase it looks like a stock set-up.

The only money I spent was on the alternator and the alt plug for the tabs.

This conversion took me about one-hour total, I highly recommend it!
Hope this thread helps someone else out.

Dano
