Paint Complete: **pics**

oK, I've been working on completing my paint job on the 69. I sprayed base and clear last weekend, wetsand this week and polished it up today. Looks good. Got a run or two since it was my first paint job, but i'm very happy. The emblems are off so that i can restore them. Picking up some model paints later today.

how about some "during" pics? looks good. how much bodywork was involved? my 72 is straight as an arrow in the quaters except the p.o. trimmed off the front lip of the wheelwell and the rockers are shot.

Alright another one done on the board. Congrats. Just in time to cruise around in the fall with the top off. Nice job. If you haven't removed the runs yet you can shave them down carefully with a razor blade so you only concentrate on the run and not sanding all of the clear around the run chancing a burn through and then sand and buff.

No rust to deal with at all, CA truck all of its life. A few dents. Original owner had removed CST Wood trim and welded in holes, did it right, then primered to protect(before pic). Some dings and small dents. I worked on it for the past couple of months, spent two weeks of vacation working on it Its not perfect, I guess when you know every inch of the body you notice everything.
Looks excellent though compared to previous look .
The tailgate is not done yet. I'm still working out some small dents! Its primered though. In a week or two I'll spray that and finish up.

I used the blade trick to bring them down a bit. I will probably go back next weekend and bring it down a bit more aggressive. They are not very noticable now, but I KNOW where they are I was getting tired so I don't like to do that stuff when i am or mistakes are bound to happen.

fyi - that front bumper was a NOS one I picked up LY off of EBAY. The outer grill is new, but aftermarket.

Jakeslim, a lot of painters once they shave the run down use a rubber block with 1000 or 1500 to block out but you can still see the run. Use a paint stick to make sure it is nice and flat. The rubber blocks go "over" the run so to speak. Just trying to help. Looks great by the way for first paint job.

funny, i used a block with 1000 also, and yes, it was tough bringing it down after a certain point. How do I use a paint stick to do this?

Thanks everyone. A few more things to do(isn't that always the case).
-Need to install some sound insullation on floors and firewall, got the carpet ready
-Need to fix that run i clear onr driver side quarter.
-Need to paint the glove box door, it got a shot of base when i sprayed the interior a couple months back, but need to get that.
- tailgate needs paint still
-I just restored my emblems last night. If anything, I would recommend everyone take some dish soap and an old tooth brush and scrub them down even if they are on truck.....amazing how shiney they got after that.

Many times i see these old k5's with white spoke rims. Were these a dealer option? Just seems like so many trucks from 69-70 have them.

Those white spoke wheels were all the rage back in 71,2,3... They were an aftermarket rim called the Tacoma. For the life of me I cant figure out why everybody thought they were so great, but this was before cnc machines and the availability of so many custom wheels.

Wrap your 1000 grit sandpaper over the paint stick several times. Break or cut the paint stick down to length so none of it is sticking out to scratch the paint and use that for your block. Small, and controlled block minimizing the area to sand. An awesome old painter taught me that years ago. I still show some painters today that work for me and are amazed that it works.

Thanks! I worked on it on Sunday again, was able to bring it down almost flat. I used 600, worked fast on the area. Since I layed 3 coats of clear, i was not too concerned on burning thru. I followed with 1000, 1500 then 2000. I may shoot the panel later if I get around to it. Its still a bit noticable and is right in the line of view(s*cks). Probably mostly in my head, but hell I got all this paint equipment now and gotta use it!
