Stock Restoration Question
What was the original factory paint? Acrylic Enamel? Does anyone know for certain? When doing a stock restoration I suspect that BC/CC is consider "over restoration" so I am assuming that a nice factory stock "orange peel" paint job would be considered perfect for a 100 pt. restoration...LOL! BTW...I am serious about this!

I suppose you'd have to add all the factory overspray as well

I believe they were using enamel on these truck way back when. Someone correct me if I am wrong. I restored an original stock 71 turquoise colored stepside once and it was enamel on that truck.

pj, I have heard that you should have the correct overspray of undercoat in all the places the factory guys shot it and the fire wall chalk marks...even if you once removed them to repaint!

Mike,
Don't forget the sags and drips! Spray some of the areas kind of thin too. (J/K Sort of) You are exactly right. You should not overdo a totally correct factory restoration.

The "stock" paint runs on my firewall are incredible. One of them looks like the painter mopped it up with his thumb, probably could identify him from it .

Don't forget to shoot some liquid rust in those rockers, door pillars, cab corners, hood panels, fenders and just about anywhere else that you can't see. LOL. I love these old trucks!

The big block Longhorn will be "over restored" and the small block will be as close to stock as possible. I am already swaying a bit from the mark in that I am not sure now if I will put the split rims on there. I have them but get all panicky about running them with the hubcaps sticking out so far. That is probably why they all got so trashed. With the wider 8.25" or 9.75" wheels they are quite well protected. Looks so much better too...LOL!

My '69 Dealer manual says, "Chevrolet trucks are painted with high-luster enamel for easy maintenance and high durability. After being thoroughly cleaned, all bodies and sheet metal are given a prime coat followed by two finish coats of baked-on high-luster enamel."
Paints had four different numbers, the first being the Chevrolet RPO paint number. Then, DuPont, Rinshed-Mason and Ditzler all had paint codes to match it. For instance: Black RPO 500 DuPont 88 R-M A-946 Ditzler 9000 The book also details the colors for bumpers, mirror heads and arms, etc. But, my book is for '69. Someone else may have one for the other years.

I have the PPG and Ditzler color sheet with paint codes but what book are you referring to? I would be interested in looking up numbers on the grill, mirrors and arms.
