My steering box is about to fall off!!

My steering box is dangerously close to falling off on my 1 ton 4x4. Isn't there away you can weld in some type of support for this?

Thanks, but 120 is a little pricey for my budget truck since I only paid 450 for it anyway. I might look into buying that anyway.

I think I'm going to buy the $69 weld on brace kit...

But more importantly, is there away to homemake a brace? This would fit into my budget .

Just make sure it is safe and done right even if you need to spend more on it.Remember yours and every bodys life is at stake if it fails. If you plan on fixing the truck up 120 bucks for the brace is a small cost compared to the work you will want to do to it.Brakes, steering and suspension is not the place to try to save a buck or too IMHO.I am not meaning to sound rude

I driven worse, had a wheel fall off one time, drive shaft failures etc...

I was thinking about getting a rachet strap to hold that thing on?? I am hoping this will work for a couple weeks.

Yea, I lost my first tooth when the wheel fell off my old El Camino. Funny thing is this truck spent some time up in Canada, they must put salt on the roads up there?

I seriously hope you are kidding. There was enough force to break the frame at that point and you are considering a nylon strap to hold it?

Is the frame broken, that is what the weld-on piece fixes and it also adds support. As for making one, sure all you need is some steel, a torch and a welder.

For those of us who live up in Canada, this sounds like a "Red Green" repair, except he would use duct tape. As he puts it ... "if women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy".

Seriously though, that sounds a little "iffy". I think I would opt to spend the extra cash and do it the right way. Do it for yourself and the rest of the drivers in the Houston area.

Just my $.02.

So if I'm hearing this right, will duct tape work too? And are you serious about the frame cracking? This probably why my truck has been vibrating and steering funny.

From what I understand - duct tape works on everything EXCEPT ductwork...

While I was not the one to comment on the frame cracking, I have seen enough photos and heard enough stories (on this board) to know that "yes" these frames will crack. I understand it is more common on the 4x4's than on 2wds like I'm driving.

Your kidding right?

NO, you can't hold a steering box on with duct tape.

Yes the frames at the steering box is the weakest part of a 73-87. ESPECIALLY on the 4x4's. If you put large tires on there, it is guaranteed to break after some time. And yes it starts causing erradic steering/vibration about the time it breaks it in two.

Re: My steering box is about to fall off!!

Hehe, I couldn't help it. But for some reason this post was funny to me .

Anyway, I found that the bolts are just loose. And also this truck isn't driven on the street. I drive it on my land since it is more fun than an ATV.
