Gas Tank

Thought I would just mention this so no one else has the same problem I have. My fuel tank was putting out a lot of rust. I considered using a gas tank sealer and decided I would rather have a new tank. I purchased a new original style behind the seat gas tank from LMC a couple months ago and it's the pits! First thing wrong was 2 of the mounting holes on the bottom did not even line up. I can kick myself that is when I should have reboxed it and sent it back. I thought well I am lucky anyone makes a tank for a truck this old. I made the holes larger so they would line up. I put the tank in the truck and when I filled it with gas I was getting fumes in the cab real bad. I drained and removed the tank and noticed a little fuel where the neck was brazed to the tank. I removed the paint from the area and found a pin hole in the braze job! I ended up using a large electric body soldering iron to repair it. I repainted it and put it back in the truck. Now comes the worse part. This tank is made of thinner metal and when you fill it up with gas and drive the truck you can actually hear the the tank expanding in and out! This is real enoying and I worry about the tank pooping out also. I was thinking about putting bed liner on the outside of it to stiffen it up. I am real disapointed with this tank.
My best guess is it is foreign made.

Bummer!

I got rid of about 3 tanks a couple of years back. They smashed them.

huge bummer man.
I plan on taking my original tank to work one day and having teh radiator shop boil and re-seal it. I don't mind the tank there, I could use the space, but it isn't worth the headache of relocating.
Besides, I think the cab is the safest place for a NON-LEAKING tank. If it gets hit hard enough to burs in an accident, I probably won't be alive to know.

Hi longhornmail... Boiling and sealing might be the best bet. I don't mind the tank in the cab too much either. I hope when I put some bed liner on it that it stops that flexing! I can't understand why some of this aftermarket stuff is made so cheap. I would rather pay another 50 or 100 dollars more for good product.

Hi Mudder67.. Have you ever been to S&S Classic trucks in Jackson, MO? I heard he has alot of new Chevy parts for our trucks. A guy by the name of Larry Elder told me a about it. He lives out my way and has 2 old chevy trucks.

I need to get down there and check it out. I would like to get a new tail gate, this way I can see what I am buying. I would like to check new rocker panels and doors too.
