New Heart for the Longhorn!
Sure it needs some work but there is a potential beast in there. 1974 small block 400 I got from PICKMUP today. I have been threatening Frank for two years that I was going to get it back...it was in a truck I sold him. I finally got it today with the help of americanrider. We had to pull it from the engine bay with my Toyota 4x4! I could see Frank running for cover or to call his insurance agent...I am not sure which...LOL! No blood...no foul! Great guys and a great time!!!!! Everyone should visit PICKMUP's toy yard!!!!!!!!!
When I get this built I can give elkhunter his loaner engine back. The guys on this board are great!

400's ROCK!
But...why are you putting it in the truck that is going to be a numbers matching ride???? Or are you bailing on the big block idea on the other longhorn? |

Andy, This is just a temporary motor for the small block Longhorn while the 327 is getting rebuilt. The original 327 is going to be an expensive rebuild since it ate a piston. I will drive the sb LH while I am finishing the big block Longhorn, since it only needs minor body work. Once the BB LH is finished, I will drive it while I am doing the 100 pt. resto. Complicated...yes...but this plan will always give me a truck to drive. I really feel like I have to get the loaner motor back to elkhunter. This motor will look like a 327...except for that external balancer...but should kick ass like no 327 ever will. I want the torque to get that 3/4 t. moving!

Here's a pic of my last small block 400...I love those motors. This one will not be that radical...LOL!

Naw...sorry that is my son. He just finished up at WyoTech and is building hotrods for a living now. Like he is any help to me. All his off time is now spent on his 4X4 Toyota wheeler. He is temporarily moving away from the V-8's...but it won't last...LOL!

Yes, time really flies when you are down there! The 400 came from something in 1974 but I did not find out what. It was a Flint built engine in august of 1974. The vin is I-Chevrolet, 4-1974, C-Lansing and vehicle number 106,653. If they start at 100,000 then it was number 6,553 off the line for 1975 model year. The engine number is F-Flint, 08-August, 21-21st day and CTA for the vehicle code it was to be put in. The casting number is for a 1974-1980 car or truck...2 bolt main. The 4-bolts were only built in 1970 - 1972 or 1973. I will check the head number this evening and pull the timing cover tomorrow after I clean it up. I want to mic. the cylinders to see if I need to bore it. I am hoping for just rings and bearings...freshen it up a bit. If it is too tired for rings...I will do the budget and see what gets done...maybe nothing but paint and run! I am not going to put that many miles on it anyway...just short trips. It ran great when it was in CARS4567 truck until it jumped a timing cog. If it was tired enough to wear out the timing chain then it may be really tired. It did not feel like a tired motor in his truck though. The numbers will not lie...LOL!
