Custom tucked exhaust question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Those of you who have tucked your exhaust up high, and cut holes through your X-member to run it through, how did you hang your exhaust, and how did you connect to your headers? I just want to know if there is enough give in the exhaust system afterwards, or if you had to use a flexible link in them.

I've done mine a couple of times to get it like I want it so I can take it to get a new system put on it. Right now I got headers into a Y pipe on driver side then into an 80 series Flowmaster (like for camaros and firebirds) that gave me an outlet on each side. First I ran them back at 45 degrees and out in front of the tires but that made too much sound inside, especially in a drive through window. So I took the outlets off and ran them under the frame to the outside of the frame, then down the outside of the frame, making sure they were far enough away from the tires, then exited them at angles on the corners with custom made tips. the first pic is the original way (with true dual exhaust back and over the rear end) I had them but I got tired QUICK of running into them so that's when I went with the 80 series and ran them on the out side of the frame (second pic look close you can barely see the tips)

I agree I would like to tuck my exhaust up into the frame back to the rear also. I have a further problem with running cats. If I get a chance to get some later model takeoffs where the cats are on the down pipes from engine --like a 2003 Silveradao or such I may try to tuck the whole thing up.

Why are you running cats?

I got tired of the noxious smells from my older vehicles when I was young plus working around construction trucks. The cats clean things up a bit. My part in helping the envirorment. Eng is a new 85 GM long block.

Yea, I like that too. Just not ready to cut holes after I welded all them in.

What I was primarily concerned with was the header connection. If I tie directly to the header, then run straight back through the transmission crossmember (through holes cut into it), is there enough play in the system to allow for engine movement?
