I am toying with the idea of putting some BFG mud tires on my newly purchased 70 3/4t 4x4 and wanted to know how much of a lift I needed. I have a good set of stock general purpose tires on there now, and like the stance, and would like to keep the lift to a minimum so I can put those on some steel wheels when I am done, and keep the road usage of the 35" to a minimum.....any thoughts 2", 4", stock?

Here is a pic of my 69 K20 when I had a 4" lift on it with 35x12.50x16 Super Swampers on it. No rubbing just driving around on the road, but I'm sure it would have rubbed off-road if you crossed the truck up.

I have the 4" Skyjacker lift on both of my K20s with 35" BFG. No rubbing on street but I'm sure it would on the front lower fender corner off road.

do you think 33's would be a problem off road without a lift? would a 2" lift be enough, or am I looking at a 4" either way I go? just trying to figure out where I can save $$$ at the moment, and still get the rig onto the road and into the mud pit!!

that pic. is not helping the fact that I can't pick up the truck until wednesday night!

I know I have read of some people running 33"s with no lift. If it is fine on the road, it might be alright in a straight mud pit. Hopefully someone with real knowledge will jump in to help on that question.

You can run 285/75s (around 33s) on a stock truck with no rubbing, maybe a little off-road. But if you want added clearence for 33s, get 2inch add-a-leafs from jc whitney. Be right around 100 bucks all 4 corners, IMO. It would also add more strength to the rear suspension if your going to work this truck at all. Get your POWER STEERING first, though.

I have a 4" with 35's and I rub when I get really twisted up off road. I have trimmed the fenders a bit, but I think I need more cutting.

For offroad use I'd go with 4" for 33's and 6" for 35's. That should be plenty without trimming, for anything but extreme use.

Where on the tires have you experienced crossed up tire rubbing? The tread, or the sidewall, or both?

I think I can see where you trimmed the front fender cups. Where else have you trimmed? The mud obscures my vision.

I typically rub the "corner" of the tire, where the tread meets the sidewall. That part of the tire contacts the edge of the wheel opening where the inner and outer fenders bolt together.

So far, I have only trimmed the front "fangs" or fender cups as you called them. Some trimming at the rear of the opening is in order.

Did you say mud? I didn't quite conquer this one.

I have 6" front, 8" rear skyjacker springs with 35's on my Blazer and I will occassionally bite the rear of the front wheelwell and the front of the rear wheelwell. I've cut the "fang" on the front, but that's it. 99% of the time it is fine - it's only when I get the axles crossed up that it becomes an issue.

Anyone have pic's of 6" w/ 37"s? I have 4" springs and I'm going to use some 2" shackles but I'm thinking 35"s will be too small.I had 33"s on it and they looked really small so they went on my D-Max and I'm trying to decide weather to run 35" or 37"s.It's my wheelin' truck so I don't need em' rubing.

You can run 35" tires if you stay w/ a narrower width tire & zero offset. I'm running 36x11.50s (305/85R16) Buckshot Mudders on late model stock steel rims & have trimmed 3" off the lower front fender corners. I have a buddy in our 4x4 club who runs 36x14.50s Swampers & has to run 8" of lift to clear them offroad. The only rubbing I get is when I'm seriously crossed up--get a tiny bit at the lower front edge of the rear fender.

Here is a pic of my 33's with 4" of lift. I have never had any clearance issues. I have been considering 35's as well but I am concerned about the rubbing.
