Help Please other HEI problems
so ive got a 70 c20 (camper special not really important) and im in the process of rebuilding it Got an HEI Dizz for it and then confusion the diagrams tell me to bypass the ballast resistor i never had one well ummm theres a problem it tells me to run bat+ on the coil to the "I or i" terminal on the starter soliniod i dont have a third terminal on that just the main line in and the switch terminal the second problem is in my head power to the coil is provided by the starter??? where is the key in this circuit??? i know i would be able to start the engine but with out the fuse box in the circuit i wont be able to shut it off? so to recap wheres my third terminal? Is this going to work? will i be able to shut it off without a bat kill switch? please send info thanks in advance Jabba |

Jabba
When I installed my HEI, I connected the + terminal of the HEI to the ignition ing terminal on the ignition switch. Use a 14 or larger wire. Don

Re: Help Please other HEI problems
fist off the original wire feeding the points dist is a resistance(ballast) wire and must be completely eliminated and a new switched wire installed to the distributor and when the key is turned off this wire goes dead turning the engine off// the 3rd wire (yellow)from the starter on points vehicles is also eliminated because it is just a resistor bypass for the points system/// look thru the FAQ section for better instructiopns

Re: Help Please other HEI problems
Welcome to the forums, Jabba.
Here is a list of articles from the "FAQ" forum here which should help. Converting to HEI on an inline 6 (lots of wiring pictures and other pics): http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=148346 HEI swap (general): http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...ad.php?t=13698 Step By Step Upgrade to HEI Distributor: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...ad.php?t=17403 Determining proper HEI advance curve for your application: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...ad.php?t=62040 Hope this helps. If you ever want to know about some project, go to the FAQ forum here. You will find an "index" thread that shows every article published to the FAQ. A link to that is HERE: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=157669 Welcome again. Good luck, post again if you need more help.

Re: Help Please other HEI problems
Definitely take a look at shifty's "Converting to HEI on an inline 6" thread even if you have a V8. He shows how to install a new distributor power wire in the original location on the big square connector on the firewall that plugs into the back of the fuse panel. This is by far the cleanest way to do it.

Re: Help Please other HEI problems
You can delete it, but most people don't. If nobody posts more responses, the thread will be consumed slowly by the vast database.

Re: Help Please other HEI problems
pjmoreland or shifty,
Does that tie-in of the power wire, also pertain to V8s??? I have my power wire connected at the fuse box. I guess what I am asking is the wiring the same for the power wire. |

Re: Help Please other HEI problems
53burb,
From what I understand, regardless of whether you have a V8, V6 or an L6, you're going to have a power wire that will start at the firewall and terminate at the (+) side of the HEI distributor - you CAN reuse the old wire, but you will want to replace it with something more robust. Pictures and examples are in my HEI swap thread for inline L6's above, just use something 12-14gauge and buy a connector from Napa as advertised in my thread. They're a few cents each. I give instructions on how to remove the firewall block, remove the wire from the block, insert the new wire into the block, then all you gotta do is addd a new spade and wire it up. It's easy, look at the thread, you'll be amazed (I was) There should be no additional branches or splits in the wire. The HEI wire is typically pink or red, but I've heard of other colors. My stock wire with the points system was a white cloth wrapped wire, I replaced it with gas/heat/etc impermeable wire from home depot. You will need to rewire or buy a new harness, whatever you think is easier. I will say this though: I do not show installation of an inline fuse - this would be a good idea to add.

Re: Help Please other HEI problems
Thanks Shifty!!!!!
My HEI is currently connected to my fuse box (Ign Unfused) plug, like most people. I will definately do this connection soon, and I will also use my inline fuse, also. I like to use it as a cheap theft deterrent. Thanks again, Chris |
