All the ones I`ve seen are capped-off from factory.Even on California trucks.Was it just`72,I think?GM made the provision,but didn`t utilize them.This was back when Capitol Hill was starting to build cars.The Feds were bombarding mfgrs right and left with new safety and environmental requirements.

I had no idea they ever came like that. Course I don't think I've ever seen one of our trucks with the smog equipment installed either. Thanks for the help guys, Jeff.

Yep, the 327 in the Panel has them capped off

They are not a pipe thread. It is a 5/16'' tubing thread. If you plug those with a pipe plug and tighten them too much you can crack the manifold. They do make a tubing plug. What is close is a 1/4 pipe--not 3/8.

Good to know. I just tried screwing different plugs in it and 3/8 seemed to fit best. Didn't have a 5/16 though. How do you decide which one fits best and won't crack it?

C.A.R.B. in California, "paved" the way for the Feds to make all kinds of emissions-related items mandatory for vehicles. California started in the early-mid 60's. They required PCV valves to be retrofitted to anything 1955 and newer, to replace the Road Draft tubes that vented crankcase gasses, and smoke, off the back of most engines and to the ground.

The smog pumps were required in CA, long before the rest of the U.S. got them.

Hot Rod magazine did a build-up on a Camaro, in the late 70's/early 80's, in which they over-drove a smog pump and pumped so much fresh air down the smog tubes that (their words) the sniffer thought it was seeing fresh air.

My 68 Burb that qksilver bought from me had the air tubes in the ram horns as well as the smog pump. As for the curve, that looks like a Chevelle or Nova manifold, or did the 2wd aim back? I have 4X4 and they all dump straight down?

i have had 2 trucks with the smog pums and air tube set up 1 was a 71 4x4 from cali and the other was 72 .
i have a set of the tubes one side is in excelant condition the other needs repair. if any one needs em i will sell em

My 1970 20,000 mile C20 had those on it with all the smog stuff. I still have them in my garage with all the tubes on it. Most of them around here probably rusted away long ago and got plugged.

Ya, these were supposed to be the 4x4 model, but I'm pretty sure they are the driver side for 2wd models. Of course they are made in China, so who knows what they are actually for. Won't work on my Blazer, on the driver side anyway. Jeff.

I have an extra set of 4X4 ram horns, if you are interested. They are the straight dump.

Yep, same as on my truck, my 68 Iowa truck used to had a smog pump at one time, for soe reason, ans I second what kwmech said, those are not pipe thread, use a flare tubing type plug.

The best I can tell, starting in 67 in califorinia and 68 and later nationwide, manual transmission 1/2 ton trucks were equipped with smog pumps. Autos had heat risers. As soon as we get attachments back I'll post a picture or two. My 68 327 still has its smog pump.

The truck I had 20 years ago actually had the lines hooked up. When we pulled the smog pump, we plugged them though. But they were hooked up when I got the truck in '73 (in Texas).

My 72 GMC (Baltimore Assembly plant) has the bosses on the manifolds but they were not machined for smog tubes.

I don't recall if the flare tubing nut is for 5/16 or 3/8 tube, but its one of those, get a tubing nut and see how it fits, a tubing nut should turn in 3-4 turns by hand, and stop suddenly when it bottoms out, get a plug in that exact same size, a NPT plug may turn in by hand about 1 turn or so and get harder to turn as you go , thats not right - you'll know when you get it right
