Shaving Drip Rails

Hello all. I am doing the bodywork on my 69 c10 now and I was wanting to shave the drip rail. Is this hard to do, or is it fairly easy.I know i need to fill the gap with weld, but I dont know if it needs a panel.

Re: Shaving Drip Rails

It's been discussed, basically it's a pain to do right because the drip rail was GM's easy way out of making two or three pieces of metal meet. IIRC if you mess it up you'll ruin the cab. May want to get a junker to practice on.

Re: Shaving Drip Rails

Three pieces of metal meet in the driprail, cut about 1 in. or so and weld at the time, if you cut more before welding you'll run the risk of the panels not lining up when you weld everything back up.
Since you asked this question it seems like it should be better you leave this to a pro before you wind up with a junk cab or as mentioned above get a junk cab to practice on

Re: Shaving Drip Rails

I did it on a 60-66 no problem, but I read an article about shaving 67-72's and there's a lot more involved to make it look right. I'll see if I can dig up the article.

Re: Shaving Drip Rails

I dont think its as bad as everyone says, I did mine this summer without ever doing any previous body repair/welding. I didnt do the full on shave, just cut the lip off and smoothed it. Just go slow and cut small portions off. A reciprocating saw saw really helps so u dont have to grind as much.

Re: Shaving Drip Rails

I thik Iread the same article,, It looks pretty involved and I'm glad I read it or I'd likely have tried it and ruined my cab.. There's a lot of ways you could screw it up,, be careful

Re: Shaving Drip Rails

Use the search feature at the top of the forum. There are some really kickass posts from days past on this topic - including what kind of filler to use and some caution - from what I remember reading, this is not that easy - when you cut the drop rail, I think there is significant work to get the two pieces to marry up again.
