Power Steering Question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am trying to change over to PS on my 67 2wd w/ 327. It appears the PO has a homemade bracket on the alt and has it mounted where the PS pump should go. Anyone have any pics of how this should be? Also have heard the gearbox needs to be shimmed to clear the frame. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I installed power steering on a '67 I used to own. Supposedly the chassis on some '67 trucks didn't have a dimple in them to provide clearance for the gearbox, but mine did. The gearbox bolted right up with no shimming.

Thanks for the help on the frame. Still could use some info on the pump and correct alt brackets if anybody has any.

Assuming you have a short water pump, the correct alt brackets are cheap as dirt. You can get chrome ones from most auto parts stores for $10-15.

For the P/S pump bracket, that's a whole other story. For a short pump, it will run you over $50 for junky raw mild steel ones from the aftermarket. I would try to pick up a used set.

would you have any pics of the correct ones. I have seen some alts on the pass side and some on the driver side. Yes mine is a short wp. It also has headers and no bolt holes in the heads. Sorry to sound like such an idiot, it's been a long time since I worked on one this old and my memory has faded.

The stock alternator bracket bolts to holes in the front of the driver side head.

I believe what you need (sounds like you have double hump heads, 327 w/no accessory holes) is this for the bottom:

OR I have seen some that are just a flat arm, with a hole in one end and a slot for tension adjustment on the other end. These prices are a little high, I think you can get them for less (the flat arm type) from Autozone or O'Reillys.

Hard to tell from that pic on the P/S pump bracket, I think they are usually at least 2 pieces. I bought a cheap billet set, but they're for a long water pump and I haven't seen any like mine for a short pump.
