A Stupid SM465 Question

Say a fellow had a few SM465 transmissions in his private parts stash. Say this same fellow wanted to put one in a short bed truck with a 1 piece driveshaft....

Is there a slip yoke for these transmissions?

They all have bolt on yokes right now, for a multi piece driveshaft with slip coupling in the middle. I am wanting to use a slip yoke so I can retain a 1 piece shaft in this truck.

Can it be done?

i have no ideal about the slip yoke for tha trans but you could have a drive shaft made with the slip part in the drive shaft itself you know like the 4x4s use

I've never heard of a slip yolk for an SM465. Not to say it doens't exist, but I doubt it

#26 on the side index of parts lists the spline and shaft diameters or the three output shafts that SM465s came with. The 2wd version of SM465s came in GM trucks somewhere from ~'73 to ~87. Did 2wd GM trucks ever use splined driveshafts?

Actually, 4x4POET, the SM465 came out in the 1968 model year in US Chevy truck production. Canada [and GMC] kept the SM420 until they ran out of them in about '69.

I know. My K10 burb and K20 pickup both have SM465s.

I just didn't word it that way because I was clumsily trying to say that since we know that 67-72 2wd GM trucks didn't come with slip yoke'd SM465s, maybe some of the 73up 2wd GM trucks had slip yokes. Especially the later '78up 2wd model SM465s that had 32 spline output shafts. I think the 32-spline output shafts stuck out further than the 10-spline & 35-spline output shafts. Of course, we know for sure that no slip yoke would ever have been made for the 10-spline units.

TxFf, if you get stuck on this, knowledge wise, perhaps a driveshaft shop would have info on the dimensions and spline count of available slip yokes that you could match to the Novak #26 output shaft info. Slip yokes are common spicer parts, no doubt. Maybe they know or their books have the info.

tx ff.i installed a sm465 in my shortbed.i used the complete drive shaft from a '68 lwb,swing bearing and all.i had to have the front drive shaft cut to length,it worked out good. but to answer your question i've never seen a sm465 with a slip yoke.

Call your local driveline guys and let them set you up!! I have Jeeps and this is a no-brainer for a good driveline shop.

Never seen anything but a fixed yoke on the back of a 465, reason being, when you tighten the bolt/nut that holds the yoke on, it 'clamps' the rear output bearing tight thus locking the mainshaft in place. On the 4wd model there is a big nut with a lock/fold over washer that accomplishes the same thing.

Sorry Poet I didn't mean to come off like an <<E/Bully>>. I have a C/10 and a K/5 both with SM465s, too.
Tex, my DI used to say "the only dumb question is the one you're afraid to ask."
Anyway I'll just sit back and copy the mail here, since this discussion has gotten over my head.

4x4 used 10 spline 68-79. 4x4 used 32 spline 80-up. 2WD used 35 spline 68-up solid yoke.

Thanks for everyone's input on this.

The reason I was asking is that I'm putting a beater short bed truck together and trying to get it completely done for under 1000 bucks cash outlay. I had 2 SM465's, so I figured to try and use one of them. But, in the meantime, I traded some welding work for a good Saginaw 3 speed. A 3 speed isn't sexy, but cash wise, it is free. So, the SM465's will be used on somethig else, later down the road.

I have the Bulldog SM465 the problem being I own 2 of them. One is hooked up to a NP205 T-case in my 73 gm 1 ton and I need help on how to get it off the engine.
