Rear Window Air Deflector

For those that have burbs with the factory rear window deflector, does this really help keep the rear window and tailgate (for those of us without barn doors) any cleaner ?

Or does it really just help suck up more fuel and make not-so-nice "noizes" in the wind at higher speeds?

Welcome to the board. I had one on my wifes old s10 blazer before we sold it this spring and it really helped alot thinking bout buying one for this one actually I recommend it myself just my .02 worth tho show us some pics of ur project when ya can

My 89 appears to have had one, but it is no longer there, I know they help and plan on getting one. It helps keep exhaust gases out of the vehicle when the rear window is down.

Mine's always had the deflector and, yes, it does indeed keep the rear window clean. In fact, it eliminates the need for a rear windshield wiper. I can attest that it even works in a Michigan Upper Peninsula winter.

I managed to find one off an 87 and should be getting it in 2 weeks or so. Also, should be getting my Elite Hedman headers in about 2 weeks. I'll post some pictures in 2 weeks when I get my camera back from my buddy.

BTW, did I happen to mention that for some reason, everything is going to be happening in 2 weeks?

I thought things where suppose to happen in threes, oh well.

Ok, received the deflector yesterday and I'm having a bit of a delema. I'm not sure if it's cuz of Veteran's day or what, but my brain just isn't working right today!

Could someone please post some pictures of their delfector from the rear of their burb and some up close pictures of the brackets?

The deflector came with the original GM instructions and it says to mount all three rear bracket bolt holes 1.6 inches from the crown or crease of the back, where the rear of the burb begins. It seems like a rather large gap between the bottom of the visor and the top of the burb, but maybe I'm miss-reading the instructions.

I'm temporarily holding it up with a gallon of antifreeze so I can move it around and I'm running a little less than 1 3/4" between the rain gutter and the visor. This gap seems a bit big. Most of the deflectors I've seen from other members pictures put the deflector almost right on top of the rain gutter.

Unfortanetly, we have a lot of burbs and blazers in the area but almost none have a deflfector and the ones that do have the plastic modern deflector.

I was just wonder if the above measurements sound about right? Or does it not really matter?

Also, does the visor ends need to be pushed into position? The visor seems to have a bit of a bow to it.

Sorry about the crappy pictures, the day was late and the burb isn't drivable at the moment. I can take some better ones in a day or so.


The ends are drupping cuz of the bow in the visor, causes the ends to push forward about 1/2".

I just went out and looked at mine. I looks like you've got it pushed a little too far back.

OK, bear with me a bit while I try to describe it in detail. There is a plastic spacer between the curved metal bracket and the roof. In your photos, it appears that this plastic spacer is "hanging out" in the rear. The proper front-to-back alignment is that the front edge of the spacer is lined up square and flush with the front of the curved bracket. The rear edge is about 1/8" forward of the rear roof bend above the rain gutter. In other words, the rear of the plastic spacer is located at the rearmost portion of the flat part of the roof.

Of course, the left-right centering is self explanatory.

it all depends on the type... it does almost no good on the wife's nissan, the rear wiper is needed on it... but for vehicles this size that has a larger area to divert the air downward, it does help

pretty funny to find this old thread about this rear deflector.

I am getting the feeling it has no use at all...We drive our burb about 100 km/h all the time (about allmost 60 mph) and it rains a lot here in the netherlands and even in heavy rain I dont see the water moving down the back window, it just seems to sit there. but then agai I have no reference, but would love to take it off...I think it looks strange on our Burb on the back

i had one on the 88,with barn doors
sure seemed to help clear the back better then the 87 without
i took it off now, for the Jimmy,it helps keep the exhaust out too
you could remove the top half see if it helps/works even less
but may need to angle it more ....

I just took mine off. No difference in dirt. And my truck is white so it's easy to see up close. It's just as filthy as before.

I've had a kid I used to work with try and tell me I ought to get one for my Burb, but myself, I'm just not a fan of it. That and where I live using one of those to keep dirt off the back would be like Daffy Duck using a pail to save his sinking boat. lol.Yeah he always got a lot of water out of the boat, but in the end he was always sunk.

:haha so funny! but I think it is true. I think I am going to take mine off this summer. Already tok the useless roofrack of, now I just need to take of the deflector...I think the rain rail even causes so much turbulence, that no wind is even deflected towards the window anyway...
