Whoa, suddenly running crappy, then it went away....
This just started happening. One morning while driving to work my truck started running really rough, shaking, wanting to die on me. Then it just went away and started running normal again. About a week later it did it again. Wasn't overheating, not out of gas, spark plugs are almost new, wires are fine. I have a 327 with '77 HEI, Carter AFB, Edelbrock Performer intake, '77 350 heads and a TH400. I'll probably change the fuel filter since I can't really remember when I did it last, but I was wanting to get input on what other problem I might want to look for. Thanks.

No, its not that. I have that problem sometimes and am familiar with the symptoms. It just idles really low when it does that. This was different and the engine was at operating temp.

Re: Whoa, suddenly running crappy, then it went away....
i just looked at your pic in the other thread,if its the same motor i noticed that your fuel filter is sitting on your intake between you carb and valve cover, maybe your intake is heating up enough to evaporate the fuel in there at certain times and your getting airpockets in the line.

Thats a good theory but I've been running it like that for years. This only started recently. Could my ignition module be going bad, maybe? I havn't had a lick of trouble with my HEI for over 10 years.

Re: Whoa, suddenly running crappy, then it went away....
yeah it could be that but if youve been running that motor for over ten years with the same hei its more than likely time for a new shaft on the dizzy.
my hei was in the big block for just about 5 years and when i had the new motor built the guy showed me the wear and the teath in just those few short years,so i dont know if this would contribute to the prob but it would affect your timing a bit.

I would put on new module, cap, button and coil and that should clear it up.easy and pretty cheap to do, and you said it has been ten years without a hitch I believe it's time for a change.

Re: Whoa, suddenly running crappy, then it went away....
Well, this is odd. I was poking around under the hood and noticed the hose clamp for my upper hose at the thermostat end was very loose. Dangling, in fact. I'm puzzled because it was still "pressure glued" to the hose partly. You know how hoses and clamps stick to each other after awhile. I'm wondering if someone tampered with my engine for some reason. Clamp shows no sign of failure. I find out if someone is messing with my truck and who they are, they're gonna get some of this :nut:
Well, I'll pop the dizzy cap and see if theres anything there unusual.

I'm really wondering now if someone messed with my truck. It's giving off an odd smell, almost like diesel fuel, but different. The exhaust smells weird too. I'm thinking something got into my gas tank. Maybe its time for a locking gas cap.

Re: Whoa, suddenly running crappy, then it went away....
I have an Edelbrock Performer carb on my truck, which I believe is the same thing as a Carter AFB. I had an intermittent problem where one of the fuel bowl valves would stick occasionally. This would cause a bunch of extra fuel to start dumping into my engine. Needless to say, it would run extremely poorly, and the exhaust smelled kind of burnt. Then finally one day the fuel bowl valve got stuck wide open. I took a look down my carburetor and saw fuel pouring in. That's when I finally figured out what the problem was. I have since learned that it is a good idea to install a fuel pressure regulator to lower the pressure a bit.

Yeah, the carb is about due for a good cleaning.
