Progress made

Today was good for me and the old 70. First thing I tackled was filling in the spot where the original fuel tank filler was.

Got to play with my plasma cutter again and cut a filler pisec from my old bed front. By the way, it turns out that the inside diameter of a roll of masking tape is the perfect size for a template. I free bent it in the vice to get it to confrom better with the cab lines, hopefully to need less filler later.

All held in place and ready to weld. In case your wondering those are magnets from computer harddrives. They make an excellent extra pair of hands for welding.

All welded up and waiting for the filler coat. I still need lots more practice with my welding, but I'm having fun.

More in next post.

Re: Progress made

I also worked on patching up my dash around the radio. The original owner had screwed a radio blank to the dash, besides wacking up the knob holes.

The screw holes welded up pretty easy.

Filling in the gash for the knobs took some more work, but I got it close know. I still have to tweak it some, but it should hide pretty well once it is painted up.

Also welded up some holes in the floor and added some bracing for the new seats (forgot to take pictures)

Between the welding while things kooled, I was also able to clean the 35 years worth of old tobacco juice off the roof and back inside of the cab. Man that stuff is YUCK!

Re: Progress made

I take it you are going with and OE radio? I have OE in mine and will be putting a new radio w/remote and CD player in the glove box out of site and still have room to store stuff plus I have the OE console with the buckets where I can also store things. Looks like you are doing a great job. Keep the pictures coming.

Re: Progress made

Bill, it's great to see an apdate on your progess.

Aren't you the guy who used to work outside on your truck, then built a shop, etc.? If so, you've sure come a long way over the last couple of years.

Regards,
Kevin

Re: Progress made

TX Firfighter....yes that was me and Oh it is soo nice not to have to work around the weather (short of hurricanes). I love my shop...although like all of us could use a bigger one already

papawswrench...board member EdB showed me the trick with the magnets and I had lots of broken hard drives lying around...so I keep Ed and I in magnets. They are super strong...sometime I think to strong.

Bring it on krue....it'll cost you a blazer (well frame) though...

Re: Progress made

Bill,

We sold our old house with small shop and built our new dream house on 5 acres, so now I have no shop anymore, only a carport to work under. I have the money for a new shop, but writing that 16k dollar check is making me nervous. I need to do it so I'm not working under the carport in the middle of winter. How big is your shop?

Re: Progress made

Kevin...mine is 30x24...with a 15x18 overhang (carport). It really is big enough for what I do, but I'm sure I could always find a way to fill a bigger one.

Re: Progress made

I feel your pain Tex, I just moved to our new place and don't even have a concrete slab over here yet. It's hard to justify building a shop when we're still living in a mobile home and haven't even started on the house yet. Bill's shop is sweet, I gotta get back down there and visit his plasma cutter, I mean him.

Re: Progress made

Krue,

That's me, I'm working in the gravel driveway under a carport. I have to weld between wind gusts so my MIG doesn't splatter. I connect two extension cords together to get power to the carport. It sure makes me miss the old place. But, all will be better than before, as soon as I grow a pair and get the shop built.

I was considering a 24x30 like Bill has, but folks have me convinced to go 30x40 instead. That steel price sure is expensive nowdays too.

Re: Progress made

Bill,
Nice shots of your progress! Looks like it is coming along nicely. Glad to see that you are getting to work on the "toy" again. PM me if you want the sport mirrors that I had on your new doors. I decided to go a different route this time around.

On the shop, guys I miss my old one too! It was only a 21x24 single truck garage but man to I miss it. I have been getting ready for the '71 to come back from the bodyshop and I have parts scattered all around. My wife has already been asking me about the new garage. I told her it would probably be 30x40 or maybe even 30x42. She doesn't care since the current 25x25 will be turned into a "great room" as she calls it. (Great more "fru-fru")
