Converting to 5 bolt rear, Am I getting hosed??

I have a '69 step. Trying to convert from 6 lug 3.73 to 3.08 5 lug with Auburn posi in San Antonio area. I took the truck in for an evaluation; been there 6 weeks with nothing done and today, got a quote for almost $3,300.00. Am I getting hosed on a new rear end setup. Pretty much everything new except the case...I'd like to just call it a waste of time and find another business to deal with..

IMHO, keep looking. Sounds like way too much money to me.

Run as fast as you can. If it took them 6 weeks to give you a quote, how long will it take them to do the work. For 3300.00 you can buy an entire truck with the rear end that you need....

Re: Converting to 5 bolt rear, Am I getting hosed??

RUN !!! DO NOT WALK !!! Around here you can get an entire used rear axle (non posi) for about $100, might cost another 100 to 300 to have someone change it depending on what additional parts (like brakes) you have done. rebuild posi might add 500 but well under 1000 should fix you up. Also depending on your tire size, and possible clearance problems, the 71-72 axles are about 1 inch wider on each side, which may be something to consider.

Re: Converting to 5 bolt rear, Am I getting hosed??

For $3300 you could buy two or three trucks! Sounds like they don't really want to mess with it and they quote you high so you WONT let them do it. Then again with a quote that high THEY may be "HIGH"

Re: Converting to 5 bolt rear, Am I getting hosed??

Jeesh. I am with everyone else. Run away.

I have a 5 lug rear (currently 3.73's) that I could re-gear and add a posi with the matching 5 lug disk front suspension sitting in my backyard.

Although for their side, I bet the quote went something like this:
Axleshafts:375.00
Gears: 225.00
Bearings: 300.00
Carrier and posi unit: 425.00
drums: 300.00
Shoes: 65.00
blah, blah, blah.

What did they actually want to charge for labor? Shops around here would charge 225-300 for a R+P set up.

If you asked for all new hardware, it adds up. Especially if they're tacking on their 10-70% for selling it to you...

Re: Converting to 5 bolt rear, Am I getting hosed??

I have $1250.00 just in parts sitting in my garage ready to put in my 12-bolt. That doesn't include the brake stuff. A friend that owns a transmission shop in my area told me it would cost me approx. $650.00 to set the rear up since I was supplying the parts. Another friend in Harpers Ferry Wva. told me he would set it up for free if I helped him so I could see what is involved in setting the rear up. $ 3300.00 does seem rather high.
